What did Mahomes say about Trump’s remark?
At a February 5, 2025, press conference before the Super Bowl, Mahomes responded to Trump’s comment: “It’s cool to hear that he’s seen me play football and respects the game that I play.”
Mahomes also spoke about Trump’s planned attendance at the game, saying: “It’s always cool to be able to play in front of a sitting president, someone that is in the top position in our country.” The remarks addressed recognition of his football and the prospect of playing before a sitting president.
What exactly did Trump say, and did he pick the Chiefs?
On February 3, 2025, a reporter asked Trump who would win the Super Bowl. Trump replied: “I don’t want to say it, but there’s a certain quarterback that seems to be a pretty good winner.” The official transcript records that wording but does not name Mahomes or a team. The Associated Press reported that Trump appeared to be referring to Mahomes.

So Trump did not explicitly pick the Chiefs in that sentence. The distinction matters: the transcript contains an indirect allusion to a quarterback, while identifying Mahomes as its subject is a journalistic interpretation.
When and where did the exchange happen?
The comments came in the days before Super Bowl LIX, scheduled for February 9, 2025, in New Orleans, where the Kansas City Chiefs were set to play the Philadelphia Eagles. Mahomes made his remarks at a February 5 press conference.

Do Mahomes’s comments amount to a political endorsement?
No political endorsement is established by the quoted remarks. Mahomes said he appreciated hearing that Trump had watched and respected his football, and that playing before a sitting president was cool. Those statements do not, on their own, show support for Trump or his politics.
