Those symptoms can have different causes. Check YouTube’s own language setting first for translated menus, the separate keyboard setting for search text, and your TV’s system language if other apps and menus are affected. A display issue in the app is also possible.
Identify where the Chinese text appears
Before changing settings, check which part of the screen is affected. This helps distinguish a language selection from a display problem.
- YouTube menus, account labels, or settings: start with the app’s Language setting.
- Only the on-screen search keyboard: check the keyboard’s separate language control.
- The TV’s own menus and other apps too: check the TV’s system language.
- YouTube menu symbols or video titles that look Chinese or garbled despite the correct app language: an app display issue may be involved.
- Captions, subtitles, video content, or a playback overlay: treat these separately from a menu-language problem; the available guidance does not establish that they share the same cause.
Change the language in the YouTube TV app
YouTube says its TV app follows the device’s language and location by default, but the app’s language can be changed separately. Open Settings → Language, select the language you want, and confirm or apply it if prompted. See YouTube’s language settings guidance. Exact labels can vary by device and app version.
Change the search keyboard language separately
If the menus are in your preferred language but the letters on the search keyboard are Chinese, open Search and choose a keyboard language. YouTube lists Chinese among its supported keyboard languages, so Chinese characters in search input alone do not mean the entire app has changed languages. Check the TV’s system language if other screens are affected
If the TV’s settings or other apps also show Chinese, use the language controls for your specific TV model. Menu paths differ by brand, operating system version, model year, and sales region; the following is an LG US example, not a universal smart-TV path.
LG TVs running webOS 6.0 or later
For LG sets from 2021 or later running webOS 6.0 or later, the cited US guide gives this path: Settings → All Settings → General → System → Language.

LG TVs running webOS 5.0 or earlier
For LG sets from 2020 or earlier running webOS 5.0 or earlier, the cited US guide gives this path: Settings → All Settings → General → Language. LG says the available language list depends on the TV’s sales region; a language not listed cannot be added to that TV. Consult the LG US language guide and your model’s support information.

A correct language selection does not rule out a display problem. Sony has documented an issue on applicable Android TV and Google TV products in which Chinese characters or symbols could appear in the YouTube menu and video titles could use a Chinese font or look garbled. Sony said the issue did not prevent viewing: “This issue does not cause problems with the YouTube app and you will still be able to watch content as usual.”

Sony’s support page was last modified July 15, 2022, and at that time said the issue was under investigation with no countermeasure available. That historical report is not confirmation of the issue’s current status, nor does it establish the cause on every TV brand. If changing YouTube’s language does not resolve the symptom, check support for your exact TV model and contact the TV maker or app provider as appropriate. What to do next
- Identify whether the characters appear in menus, search input, titles, captions, or other playback text.
- If YouTube menus are affected, open YouTube → Settings → Language and choose the desired language.
- If only search input is affected, open YouTube → Search and choose a keyboard language.
- If the TV’s own menus or other apps are affected, follow the system-language steps for your TV’s brand and model.
- If YouTube still shows symbols or garbled text with the correct settings, consult official support for that exact TV model; do not assume a global language change will fix an app display issue.
