Reading it carefully means distinguishing its literary and religious life from the claims made about it, and from the ways later movements have invoked it.
What is the Ramcharitmanas?
The Ramcharitmanas is Tulsidas’s sixteenth-century retelling of the Ram story in Awadhi, a North Indian vernacular language. Danuta Stasik’s 2013 article identifies it as a work of 1574. It is related to the Sanskrit Ramayana associated with Valmiki, but it is not simply another name for that text: it is a distinct literary and devotional work, with its own language, choices and history of reception.
That distinction matters. A retelling does not merely carry an unchanged story into another language. It addresses its audiences through a different literary form and can make different narrative choices. The poem’s place in North Indian devotional life is part of why it matters, but its cultural reach should not be mistaken for proof that every community encountered it in the same way or had equal access to it.
How did its language and devotional role shape its importance?
Writing the Ram story in Awadhi is central to the argument that the poem broadened access to it beyond the world of Sanskrit learning. Amrita Dutta’s 2023 Scroll feature reports this view alongside the work’s literary and devotional significance. It is a meaningful account of vernacular writing’s potential, not evidence that language alone erased barriers of caste, education or social power.

The poem also belongs to a larger devotional and institutional history. A University of California eScholarship record describes the Ramcharitmanas and the Ramanandi monastic community as major forces in the Ram tradition in early modern North India. That framing helps explain why the poem is more than a literary retelling: it has been part of a community’s religious life and cultural formation.
Why is caste a central point of dispute?
Readers and critics have objected to passages they understand as demeaning subordinated castes and women or as endorsing inherited hierarchy. The disagreement is not only about whether a line sounds offensive to a modern reader; it also concerns what social order the poem presents as legitimate and how its authority has been used.
Rank #2
Stasik’s scholarly article, “Following the Path of One’s Duty: Tulsīdās’s Rāmcaritmānas as a Socio-Cultural Code,” argues that the 1574 work supports core values of Hindu varṇāśramadharma—an order organized around varna and stages of life—and could therefore function as a sociocultural code. This is a named scholar’s interpretation, not a verdict that settles the meaning of every passage or the experience of every historical audience.
Other readings emphasize the poem’s vernacular form, devotional force and literary complexity. These points do not by themselves rebut the caste critique: a work can widen access to a religious narrative while also reflecting or affirming social hierarchy. Likewise, identifying hierarchical ideas does not make the poem’s artistic and devotional dimensions disappear. The tension between those readings is part of the text’s history, not a problem that can be solved by assigning it a single label.

What do the poem’s narrative choices show?
Dutta’s feature highlights a comparison with episodes associated with the Uttara Kanda account: the killing of Shambhuka and Sita’s banishment are absent from the Ramcharitmanas, according to the feature and the interviewee it discusses. Those omissions are relevant to how readers compare versions of the Ram story, but they should not be turned into a claim about every Ramayana tradition or recension.
Not including an episode is a meaningful difference between versions; by itself, it does not establish a definitive motive for the author or prove that the work rejects every social idea associated with the omitted narrative. It is one part of a comparison that should keep each text’s particular form and context in view.

Its modern political role is disputed. Literary critic Virendra Yadav describes the work as “an indispensable part of the Hindutva ecosystem” and says it has “a place in the upper-caste order.” Those are Yadav’s interpretations of the poem’s political and social position, not neutral institutional findings.
Dutta also reports arguments against drawing a straight line from a sixteenth-century devotional poet to present-day politics. Writer Amitabha Bagchi cautions: “Truly complex literary works cannot be reduced to a manifesto for one political movement or the other.” Hindi novelist and playwright Asghar Wajahat asks: “Can you expect a 16th-century text to conform to the moral standards of the 20th century?” Their comments do not make modern political uses irrelevant; they warn against treating those uses as the poem’s only meaning or assuming that its original context and contemporary reception are interchangeable.

The debate has a history beyond the 2023 public controversy covered by Scroll. Dutta reports that the Arjak Sangh protested the poem in Kanpur in 1978, as well as describing contemporary criticism. That history shows that objections to the work’s social implications are not solely a recent response to Hindutva politics. At the same time, the political significance assigned to the text varies among critics and writers; it should be attributed rather than stated as an uncontested fact.
How can readers hold these layers together?
- Read it as a specific work. Keep its Awadhi language and distinct narrative choices in view rather than treating it as interchangeable with the Valmiki Ramayana.
- Separate access from equality. A vernacular retelling may broaden access to a story without proving that all groups had equal access or standing.
- Attribute social readings. Distinguish anti-caste criticism, Stasik’s argument about varṇāśramadharma, and the views of literary writers from claims that are established for all readers and periods.
- Track reception as well as composition. The poem’s devotional circulation, its place in community formation, protest against it and use in modern political debate are related but distinct parts of its history.
The result is not a compromise in which every interpretation is equally persuasive. It is a more precise account of why the Ramcharitmanas can be revered, criticized and politically contested: literary form, devotion, social order and later reception all matter, but none alone exhausts the work.
