The first reviews of Rebel Moon — Part One: A Child of Fire saw a clear split: Zack Snyder’s stylized visuals drew notice, while critics questioned the familiar story and the film’s unfinished, team-assembling shape. It may suit viewers seeking visual spectacle and action more than those looking for a self-contained, original-feeling sci-fi epic.
What is Rebel Moon — Part One: A Child of Fire about?
Directed by Zack Snyder, the film follows Kora, a former soldier played by Sofia Boutella, after the Motherworld threatens a peaceful farming settlement on the moon Veldt. Kora sets out to recruit allies to defend it. Netflix announced the film’s streaming release for December 22, 2023, as the first part of a planned two-part saga. Netflix’s official film page and TIME’s release coverage provide those details.

What did the first reviews praise and criticize?
Visual flair
The reviews recognized Snyder’s strong visual style. Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus describes the film as retaining visual flair, making spectacle one of its most apparent strengths. That does not mean the reviews agreed on how successful the film was overall.
A familiar story
The same Rotten Tomatoes consensus argues that the visual appeal does not make up for a story built from familiar science-fiction and fantasy tropes. Metacritic’s critic-review excerpts also include individual reviewers who called the material derivative and criticized the thinness of its story and characters. Those are critical judgments, not a claim that every reviewer reached the same verdict.

#1 Best Overall
Rotten Tomatoes’ review page and Metacritic’s critic reviews show the distinction between an aggregator’s consensus and individual assessments. Neither is a dated historical score snapshot here, so a percentage or review count would not reliably represent what critics thought at the time of the first reviews.
Why did some reviewers find the first part incomplete?
The installment’s structure was a prominent reservation. In its December 15, 2023 review, The Guardian described much of the film as the process of getting the group together and judged that the larger story feels postponed to the continuation. It lists the running time as 134 minutes. That is one reviewer’s assessment of the pacing and ending, rather than an objective measure of every viewer’s experience. Read The Guardian’s review.

Who is likely to enjoy it?
| If you prioritize… | The first reviews suggest… |
|---|---|
| Visual style and stylized action | The film’s striking look may be a draw; critics acknowledged Snyder’s visual flair. |
| Story originality and a complete arc | Familiar genre elements and a first chapter focused on recruiting allies may be frustrating. |
This comparison is an inference from the review themes, not a measured account of audience reactions. The reviews support a more nuanced description than either “a must-see epic” or “a failure”: the visual ambition is noticeable, but the storytelling and installment structure were real points of criticism.
