John Cena’s heel turn at WWE Elimination Chamber on March 1, 2025, was a striking surprise and a fresh premise for his farewell year. Its appeal lay in watching a familiar hero reject the role the audience expected him to play; its weakness was that the story did not always sustain that shock with equally strong follow-through. With Cena’s retirement match now complete, the turn is best judged as a compelling idea with uneven execution.
What happened when Cena turned on Cody Rhodes?
At Elimination Chamber, Cena turned on Cody Rhodes and aligned himself with The Rock and Travis Scott, setting up a major conflict with Rhodes. WWE executive Paul “Triple H” Levesque later framed the choice as a challenge for Cena’s final chapter, rather than a simple nostalgia play. He said Cena wanted to do something different, risk failure and “go out on his shield.” (Wrestling Attitude, March 2, 2025)
On Raw in Brussels on March 17, Cena offered his character’s explanation: he resented fans for treating him like their puppet and demanded the right to be more than a hero or villain. “I am not a babyface. I am not a heel. I am a human being,” he said. The grievance was part of the story, not an established account of how audiences had treated him. (CBS Sports, March 18, 2025)
Why viewers could love the turn
It was a real break from the familiar Cena
For years, Cena had occupied WWE’s central heroic role. Seeing him attack Rhodes and stand with The Rock and Scott instantly changed the emotional meaning of that familiar figure. Triple H described the moment as unusually powerful in Cena’s career, and the abrupt reversal gave the audience a clear new conflict to follow. (Wrestling Attitude, March 2, 2025)

It gave a farewell year a dramatic risk
A retirement tour can easily become a sequence of celebratory returns and tributes. Turning heel put Cena in an unfamiliar position instead. Triple H’s explanation emphasized that Cena wanted to challenge himself rather than rely on the safe affection attached to his legacy. That ambition made the turn feel like a consequential choice, not just a surprise for its own sake. (Wrestling Attitude, March 2, 2025)
His grievance made the audience part of the story
In Brussels, Cena made the crowd’s long relationship with him the subject of his character’s anger. Whether viewers agreed with his accusation or not, the promo gave the heel turn a personal premise: he claimed he was done being shaped into the audience’s preferred version of John Cena. That put his history with fans at the center of the conflict. (CBS Sports, March 18, 2025)

Familiar music and presentation became taunts
Rather than relying on a radically different look or entrance music, Cena kept recognizable signals and used them to antagonize the crowd. The effect depended on contrast: the same cues that had once invited a positive response now accompanied a performer openly rejecting that expectation. (CBS Sports, March 18, 2025)
Why viewers could dislike the run
The stated motive could feel unearned
Cena’s character accused fans of bullying and controlling him, but viewers who felt they had supported him could read the speech as self-serving: a star blaming the audience rather than establishing a convincing reason for his actions. The idea was provocative; whether it felt credible depended on how persuasive the audience found the grievance. (CBS Sports, March 18, 2025)

The initial shock needed more consistent follow-through
In an October 2025 retrospective, CinemaBlend argued that The Rock’s absence after the turn left a key part of the angle missing, while the attempt to carry the story through Travis Scott did not work. That is one critic’s assessment, not a measure of general audience opinion, but it identifies a practical weakness: a huge alignment creates expectations for those figures to matter in the story that follows. (CinemaBlend, October 13, 2025)
A limited schedule could make momentum harder to maintain
The same retrospective pointed to Cena’s limited dates as one reason story development sometimes felt light. That is a contributing factor in the writer’s critique, not a complete explanation for the run’s unevenness. A farewell schedule and a sustained weekly storyline do not always fit neatly together, but the criticism is ultimately about the effect on the narrative: the program could feel less developed between its major moments. Strong moments did not make the whole run consistent
CinemaBlend praised the Rhodes promo and selected matches while also criticizing the booking and uneven execution. That mixed assessment explains how someone could find individual parts of the heel run memorable yet still feel that the larger farewell story did not deliver consistently. Cena’s retirement story has a definite endpoint: WWE reported that Gunther made him submit in his final match at Saturday Night’s Main Event in December 2025. That lets viewers assess the heel turn as one part of a completed farewell, rather than as a promise whose ending is still pending. (WWE.com, December 15, 2025)

The most useful distinction is between the premise and its delivery. As a premise, the turn was surprising, challenged Cena, and made his history with the audience dramatically relevant. As a sustained program, it faced questions about the credibility of his grievance, the continuity of its supporting cast and the pace of development. The evidence available here records events and individual critical judgments, not a representative poll of how viewers felt.
