A Reading Month culminating program is a school’s chosen closing celebration for the month’s reading activities. There is no single required format: examples from Philippine schools combine literary performances, contests, creative projects and recognition. Use the ideas below as options, then adapt the event to your students, venue, schedule and school guidance.

What is a Reading Month culminating program?

It is an event that brings together activities held during Reading Month and may recognize student participation or achievement. The format depends on the school; published school examples are illustrations, not a universal official template.

For example, Sisters of Mary School–Adlas reported that its 2025 program took place on November 25 at the school gymnasium and was led by the English Department. The event included student performances, creative activities and contests, with certificates and medals for winners. Read the school’s event report.

Another school report describes a literary costume parade alongside storytelling, reading comprehension, poster-making and character impersonation contests. See Gotamco Elementary School’s report.

Activities to include

Choose activities that connect clearly to reading and give students a suitable way to participate. Options documented in school examples include:

  • Literary performances: speech choir, musical theater, poetry recital, declamation, or student readings.
  • Creative projects: bookmark making, poem composition, or poster-making.
  • Reading challenges: storytelling, reading comprehension contests, or a quiz bee.
  • Character and book-themed events: a literary costume parade or character impersonation.
  • Interactive stations: reading stations or other short activities students can rotate through.

A 2022 Bell-San Francisco Elementary School memo reproduced on Scribd also lists cosplay, poetry and reading presentations, and reading stations. Treat it as an older example rather than current guidance. View the 2022 memo.

How to choose a format

There is no evidence in these event reports establishing one best activity mix or showing that a particular culminating-program format improves reading outcomes. Select activities for your students and practical constraints, rather than assuming a larger or more performance-heavy program is more effective.

  • Age and grade: Match the reading level, activity directions and performance expectations to the learners.
  • Reading connection: Make the link to books, reading, storytelling or language clear to students and families.
  • Participation: Balance stage performances with options for students who would rather create, read in small groups or take part at a station.
  • Time and venue: Account for setup, transitions, audience size and the space each activity needs.
  • Preparation and budget: Check what the school already has before purchasing supplies or adding activities that require substantial rehearsal.
  • Accessibility: Offer ways to participate that account for varied reading abilities and learner needs.

Suggested program sequence

This is a flexible example, not an official order. Adjust the timing and number of activities to fit the school’s event plan.

  1. Welcome and purpose: Greet students and guests, and briefly explain how the celebration connects to the month’s reading activities.
  2. Student presentations: Begin with one or more readings, poems, performances or other literary presentations.
  3. Activities or contests: Run the selected contest, creative activity or participatory station. If there are several, plan transitions and clear instructions.
  4. Recognition: If the school held contests, acknowledge participants and announce winners. Certificates or medals are options used in one school example, not requirements.
  5. Closing and thanks: End with a short message and thank students, teachers, families and organizers.

Optional materials checklist

Prepare only what the chosen activities require. For a bookmark-making activity, check existing classroom supplies before buying anything.

  • Bookmark-making supplies, if the program includes bookmark making
  • Contest prompts, answer sheets or scoring materials, as needed
