Spoilers for Re:ZERO Season 3, Episode 1. “Theatrical Malice” (Japanese: 「劇場型悪意」) is a 90-minute premiere that begins one year after the Sanctuary conflict. Subaru and Emilia’s camp travel to Priestella for a reunion and a possible new vessel for Puck, but the visit turns into a Witch Cult emergency led by Sirius Romanée-Conti. The episode ends with Priestella facing catastrophe, not with the crisis resolved.
What happens in “Theatrical Malice”?
One year has passed since the battle at the Sanctuary. Subaru’s camp has found a more peaceful rhythm, and the group is more united than it was during the conflict. That calm is broken by a letter: Anastasia invites Emilia and her companions to Priestella, the Water Gate City. The official episode synopsis describes Subaru’s days as fulfilling and peaceful before the letter arrives (official Episode 51 story page).
Anastasia’s invitation brings the camp to Priestella
Anastasia sends Joshua and Mimi as messengers. Her invitation gives the group a reason to travel, while also offering Emilia a potential lead: a merchant has a magic stone that may be suitable as a new vessel for Puck. The stone is a possibility, not a confirmed solution.
Priestella initially feels like a welcoming change of pace. Subaru and his companions meet familiar faces, and the premiere gives the reunion atmosphere room to develop before shifting into danger. The city’s warm reception makes the turn that follows more abrupt.

The Witch Cult attack changes the visit into a crisis
The peaceful visit gives way to an attack by the Witch Cult. The episode guide identifies Sirius Romanée-Conti as a leader of the assault and describes the resulting disaster and flood aftermath (TV Guide’s Season 3 episode guide). The premiere closes on that immediate emergency: Priestella is in peril, and the larger city crisis has only begun.
Why the premiere is a 90-minute special
“Theatrical Malice” is Season 3 Episode 1 and cumulative Episode 51. It runs 90 minutes, giving the season opener time to establish the one-year time jump, bring the Emilia camp back together on screen, and set up the Priestella visit before the attack. The official announcement describes the premiere as a 90-minute special, and Prime Video lists a runtime of 1 hour 30 minutes (official Re:ZERO news; Prime Video listing).

What does “Theatrical Malice” set up?
The title points toward the episode’s contrast between a city visit that begins with hospitality and a public, destabilizing attack. The group arrives for a potential Puck-related lead and a reunion; instead, the Witch Cult forces them into an unfolding emergency. The episode establishes the threat and its consequences without resolving Priestella’s battle, so the ending is best understood as a cliffhanger rather than a complete account of the city’s fate.
