Re:Zero Season 3, Episode 16, “The Result of the Battle for Priestella,” closes the Counterattack Arc and the season with a split focus: Otto and Beatrice’s fight against Gluttony offers an immediate conflict, while the finale’s last dramatic turn points beyond it. That structure can make the episode feel lopsided—especially if you wanted more room for the battle’s emotional aftermath—but “filler” is better understood here as a pacing complaint, not a claim that the episode is anime-original padding.
What Episode 16 is trying to conclude
The finale is season 3’s sixteenth episode, titled “The Result of the Battle for Priestella.” ORICON identifies it as overall episode 66. Its platform synopsis centers on Otto and Beatrice facing Gluttony, the last Sin Archbishop terrorizing Priestella. Apple TV lists the episode as 23 minutes, while a regional Prime Video listing gives 24 minutes; those are platform listings, not a single universal runtime.
Episode 16 is also the closing installment of the Counterattack Arc, which occupies the season’s second eight episodes after an eight-episode Attack Arc. That dual role matters: it must deliver some kind of season-arc conclusion while also making space for a season-ending dramatic turn. ORICON’s March 25, 2025 preview frames the immediate stakes around Otto nearly being devoured by Rye, Beatrice’s rescue, and the danger of her having only five spells left with Subaru absent. The preview also says Rye’s Authority continues consuming people from the White Dragon’s Scale.
Why the balance can feel off
The battle carries the local stakes
The Otto-and-Beatrice confrontation gives the episode a concrete problem to solve: stop Gluttony while working around Beatrice’s limited resources and Subaru’s absence. That setup gives the fight urgency, but it also creates an expectation of proportionate payoff. If the battle’s resolution or its character consequences are hurried past, the episode can feel as though it has spent more energy arranging the danger than letting the characters live through its outcome.

The season ending competes with the fight
A finale can close its immediate conflict and still end by opening a larger question. The tension is one of emphasis: does the final turn feel like the next meaningful beat after the Priestella battle, or does it redirect attention before the episode has allowed that conflict to settle? Viewers who wanted emotional closure from the local fight may experience the pivot as an interruption; viewers drawn to forward momentum may welcome it as a suspenseful handoff.
“Filler” describes a feeling, not a verified production fact
Calling the episode filler is defensible only as shorthand for a viewing experience—for example, if connective setup seems to take up space that should have gone to resolution, or if the emotional payoff arrives too late to land. The available episode and season materials do not establish that Episode 16 contains anime-original filler. The official season introduction says the anime is based on the MF Bunko J novel series, but it does not identify the exact volume or chapters adapted here. The official season introduction places the story after the Sanctuary events and describes Anastasia inviting Emilia’s group to Priestella, where danger gathers.

Why reactions to the finale differ
Comments in the r/Re_Zero finale discussion show disagreement rather than a settled verdict. One commenter wrote, “Episode 16 also felt a bit choppy to me in the anime”; another said, “The finale. It felt really rushed.” A different commenter said that, “as an anime only … everything seemed pretty cohesive to me.” Other participants praised the ending, including its cliffhanger and music. These are individual reactions in a discussion, not a representative audience poll or a consensus score.
That divide makes sense when the episode is judged on different scales. Someone focused on whether the Otto-and-Beatrice conflict gets enough emotional room may find the pacing uneven; someone focused on the season’s larger momentum may find the ending cohesive and compelling. The question is less whether the finale objectively succeeds or fails than whether its shift from local resolution to future-facing suspense gives enough weight to both.

Verdict: an uneven ending, not literal filler
Episode 16’s most persuasive weakness is balance: the Priestella fight, its character payoff, and the season-ending turn have to share limited space. If the battle’s aftermath feels compressed beside the final tease, “falls flat” captures a plausible response. But the episode still has a defined conflict and a season-arc role, and viewers also found its ending effective. “Feels like filler” works as a description of perceived pacing or delayed payoff—not as a substantiated claim about the episode’s production or source adaptation.
