Pearl Jam’s Ten topped Rolling Stone’s 2012 readers’ poll of the best grunge albums, followed by Nirvana’s Nevermind and Alice in Chains’ Dirt. That is the result of one dated reader poll—not a definitive or current consensus. The full ranking below is reproduced by a contemporary report published November 17, 2012.

What the ranking says about the albums
The top three provide three distinct entry points into the poll’s version of grunge: Pearl Jam’s Ten won the reader vote, Nirvana’s Nevermind came second, and Alice in Chains’ Dirt placed third. The Recording Academy’s retrospective describes Dirt in terms of bleakness, while also noting how varied the scene’s sound could be.

For a more abrasive or hard-rocking sound
The Recording Academy characterizes Soundgarden’s Badmotorfinger as closer to hard rock, with Led Zeppelin among its influences. It also contrasts Pearl Jam’s Vs. with Ten, making the two Pearl Jam entries a useful comparison rather than interchangeable picks.
For a wider view than the most famous records
The list includes Mudhoney and Temple of the Dog alongside the best-known major-label releases. The Recording Academy’s account also discusses Tad, Screaming Trees, 7 Year Bitch, and Love Battery—evidence of a broader grunge-era scene than any top ten can capture. A 2026 feature on Sub Pop traces the label’s roots to a Seattle fanzine from the mid-1980s and describes it as a springboard for Nirvana, Soundgarden, and Mudhoney. It likewise cautions that bands grouped under “grunge” did not all sound alike. The Recording Academy’s 2011 retrospective and Louder’s September 29, 2026 Sub Pop feature provide that scene context.

How the poll compares with current user ratings
A different order appeared on Album of the Year’s weighted user-score chart when accessed in October 2026: Nevermind ranked first, In Utero second, Dirt third, Jar of Flies fourth, Superunknown fifth, and Ten sixth. The chart showed 90 points and 24,110 ratings for Nevermind at that time. These are live, audience-generated chart values, not industry statistics; they can change. The page says albums need 25 ratings to chart and had been updated one day before access. Album of the Year’s grunge chart is a separate measure from the 2012 poll.
Which album should you listen to first?
If you want to follow the poll’s result, start with Ten. For an alternative starting point, use the contrast among the records rather than treating “grunge” as one fixed sound: try Nevermind for the poll’s runner-up, Dirt for the bleak character noted by the Recording Academy, or Badmotorfinger for its harder-rocking profile. Then compare Pearl Jam’s Vs. with Ten, or go beyond the best-known names with Mudhoney and Temple of the Dog.

About the poll and its limits
The ranking is a reader poll published in 2012 and reproduced by a report dated November 17 of that year. It should be read as a snapshot of those readers’ choices, not as the latest ranking or an objective verdict on the genre. The current user chart reflects another audience and a different scoring method, so its order is not a direct update to Rolling Stone’s poll.
