Borderlands 3’s Guns, Love, and Tentacles expansion brings Sir Hammerlock and Wainwright Jakobs together in a wedding story. In a 2021 interview with GamesBeat, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford described that development as a continuation of the characters’ stories rather than a deliberate political statement. His account offers a window into how the team approached this storyline, but it does not establish Gearbox’s current workplace policies or practices.
How Hammerlock’s relationship developed
Sir Hammerlock first appeared in Borderlands 2. Pitchford told GamesBeat that writer Anthony Burch included a brief reference to Hammerlock having had an old boyfriend, without calling special attention to it. In Borderlands 3, Hammerlock is partnered with Wainwright Jakobs. Pitchford recalled that an end-credit image showed a marriage proposal, and that the team later developed the wedding alongside a horror storyline for the Guns, Love, and Tentacles expansion.

GamesBeat reported that the expansion came out in March 2020 and centers on Hammerlock and Wainwright’s wedding. It is the specific part of the series discussed in Pitchford’s account; the base game alone should not be confused with the expansion’s wedding storyline. GamesBeat’s interview was published May 30, 2021, and updated June 19, 2025.
Pitchford’s stated creative principle
Pitchford said the team did not begin with a goal of making the wedding a political statement. “We didn’t do it to take a stand, honestly,” he told GamesBeat. He framed the decision instead as following the characters’ established stories: “As storytellers, what we need to do is respect where these characters would lead themselves and let that happen.”

That is Pitchford’s explanation of the creative process, not a definitive account of how every player or critic should interpret the story. A work can carry meaning for audiences beyond the intentions its creators describe.

In the same interview, Pitchford described Gearbox as a diverse creative environment with LGBTQ+ and other diversity groups. He said these groups gave employees ways to raise concerns and suggest changes. He also said, “So I want us to always be careful to be a safe place for people that are a little different.” These are his descriptions and views in a 2021 interview, not confirmation of the company’s current structure or policies.

Pitchford also recounted taking part in efforts to oppose proposed Texas “bathroom bills,” including meeting a local representative. GamesBeat’s article says the bill did not pass; Pitchford’s account describes his involvement in that past effort. Neither point establishes the present state of Texas law or Gearbox’s current political activity.
There is an earlier example of public engagement: GameSpot reported in June 2014 that Gearbox planned an inclusivity panel at GaymerX2 with Pitchford and other developers. The report also said attendees could play the then-unreleased Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel. This is historical context, not evidence of a current event partnership.
