Rami Malek’s movie behind the “Mr. Robot meets John Wick” comparison is The Amateur, a 2025 espionage thriller. Malek plays Charlie Heller, an introverted CIA decoder who pursues the people responsible for his wife’s death after his supervisors refuse to act. The comparison describes the story’s blend of technical intelligence and revenge-thriller action; it is not an official tagline or a confirmed influence.
What is Rami Malek’s new movie?
The Amateur adapts Robert Littell’s novel of the same name. Directed by James Hawes and written by Ken Nolan and Gary Spinelli, the film stars Malek as Charlie Heller, a CIA decoder whose wife is killed in a terrorist attack in London. When the agency does not pursue those responsible, Heller takes matters into his own hands.
20th Century Studios describes Heller’s intelligence as his weapon: “When his supervisors refuse to take action, he takes matters into his own hands, embarking on a dangerous trek across the globe to track down those responsible, his intelligence serving as the ultimate weapon for eluding his pursuers and achieving his revenge.” 20th Century Studios’ official film page also lists Rachel Brosnahan, Caitríona Balfe, Michael Stuhlbarg, Laurence Fishburne, Jon Bernthal, Holt McCallany, Julianne Nicholson, Adrian Martinez and Danny Sapani among the cast.
Why compare it to Mr. Robot and John Wick?
The phrase is an editorial analogy used by BGR, not a studio description. It points to two parts of the premise: Heller brings the analytical, technology-minded skills associated with Mr. Robot, while the murder of his wife and his pursuit of those responsible supply the revenge-thriller setup suggested by John Wick. The official synopsis backs the broad contrast—intelligence and revenge—but does not establish a connection to either franchise or say that either was an influence.

That distinction matters: The Amateur is neither a new Mr. Robot story nor a John Wick installment. The comparison is a quick way to convey its mix of an unconventional, cerebral protagonist and a globe-spanning pursuit, not a promise that the films share a style or universe.
Release date and streaming information
20th Century Studios lists April 11, 2025, as the U.S. release date. Disney UK also said the film opened in cinemas on April 11, 2025, in its UK press announcement. That date has passed; it is a release date, not an upcoming premiere.

Disney UK announced that The Amateur would arrive on Disney+ in the UK on July 17, 2025. That announcement applies to the UK and that date; it does not establish current availability in other countries.
