In a 2019 interview with Scroll.in, Rakhee Gulzar explained why she returned to Bengali cinema for Nirbon after a long absence—and why being recognised by audiences does not make her public property. Gautam Halder’s film drew her in through its story, while her reflections on fame were shaped by a clear boundary between her work and private life.
Why Rakhee Gulzar chose Nirbon
Nirbon marked Rakhee Gulzar’s return to Bengali cinema after her last screen appearance, in Rituparno Ghosh’s Shubho Mahurat (2003), according to Nandini Ramnath’s Scroll.in interview published November 7, 2019. In Halder’s film, she plays Bijobala, a 70-year-old widow. The story, adapted from Moti Nandi’s novel Bijolibalar Mukti, involves two new tenants and addresses humanity, communal harmony and inter-caste harmony.
Gulzar said making films was not then on her agenda, but the story fascinated her. She described the director, production house and story as the factors she considers when choosing an assignment. Halder told Scroll.in that she was his first and only choice; after she initially declined, he narrated the script and she agreed. As he put it, “I like to say that the script is the hero of the film and Raakhee is the heroine.”
A return shaped by a long production
At the time of the interview, the film had been nearly eight years in the making. Gulzar recalled shooting as early as 2013, after recovering from pneumonia, and said she dubbed the Hindi version herself because she is fluent in both languages. These details come from her recollection and the interview’s account of the production.

Ramnath’s 2019 article previewed screenings at the Kolkata International Film Festival, scheduled for November 8–19, and at the International Film Festival of India in Goa later that month. Those were announced festival screenings at the time; the interview does not establish a later theatrical release or current streaming, broadcast or home-video availability.
From Bengali cinema to a varied screen career
The interview traces Gulzar’s Bengali film debut to Badhu Baran (1967) and her first Hindi feature, Jeevan Mrityu, three years later. Her prominent 1970s films included Sharmeelee, Daag, Blackmail, Tapasya, Kabhi Kabhie, Trishul, Muqaddar Ka Sikandar, Kasme Vaade and Kalaa Patthar.

She also worked in films outside mainstream formula, including Awtar Kaul’s 27 Down, Aparna Sen’s Parama, Kalpana Lajmi’s Rudaali and Ghosh’s Shubho Mahurat. Ramnath described Shubho Mahurat as her last screen appearance before Nirbon; the interview presents the Bengali film as a return, not as evidence of her subsequent or current filmography.
Recognition, fame and personal boundaries
Gulzar drew a distinction between being recognised and being treated as constantly accessible. “I am not public property,” she said, objecting to unsolicited selfie requests. The interview recounts that people approached her for photographs even while she was recovering in hospital from dengue earlier in 2019. She said the fans she considered genuine remembered specifics—a song or a role—rather than seeking a picture without regard to the moment.

Her own satisfaction came from that recognition: “My reward is when people come up to me even now and say they recognise me.” The point was not that she rejected audiences; she valued being remembered, while resisting the assumption that fame erased her right to privacy.
Why she kept her private life private
Gulzar said she rarely attended premieres or parties. She viewed acting as her profession and said she left it behind at the studio. She also declined to write a biography because discussing private matters could hurt other people. Instead, she said she had been writing notes for her daughter, filmmaker Meghna Gulzar.

She recalled that people called her “Queen of the Ivory Tower,” adding, “Recluse is a mild word.” Her description of the retreat she valued was grounded in nature: “There are plants and animals and birds, and that is the only soothing place where I can get some peace of mind.”
