Williams made Omar Little in The Wire one of television’s most indelible characters—but Omar was only one part of a career spanning period drama, film, limited series and work that earned repeated Emmy recognition. Here are eight notable achievements, selected to show that range rather than presented as an official ranking.
1. He made Omar Little unforgettable
Williams’s portrayal of Omar Little is the role most closely associated with him. A distinctive presence and a performance that held together the character’s toughness and vulnerability made Omar a defining figure in The Wire. The Television Academy identifies Omar among Williams’s signature roles; that recognition belongs to Williams’s performance, not a claim that he alone created the character. Television Academy and The Guardian document the role’s place in his career.
2. He created a second defining character as Chalky White
In HBO’s Boardwalk Empire, Williams played Albert “Chalky” White, a prominent figure in a period drama far removed from Omar’s contemporary Baltimore. The role established that his screen identity was not confined to one celebrated crime series or character. The Television Academy and the British Film Institute include Chalky among his major roles.
3. He made the transition from dance and modeling to acting
Before focusing on acting, Williams worked professionally as a dancer and model. The BFI recounts that appearing in a George Michael music video helped prompt his interest in acting. That route into screen work was an unusual beginning to a career that would become defined by character performances across television and film. The BFI retrospective and Williams’s official biography describe his early career.

4. He carried his work into film
Williams’s film credits include Gone Baby Gone, The Road and 12 Years a Slave. These roles extended his screen work beyond the television series for which he is best known, and placed him in films spanning crime, post-apocalyptic drama and historical drama. The examples show breadth of credits, not that each was a lead role. The BFI and The Guardian record these film appearances.
5. He earned Emmy nominations for work across different productions
Williams received Emmy nominations for performances in productions including Bessie, The Night Of, When They See Us and Lovecraft Country. The recognition spans different projects rather than resting solely on The Wire. These were nominations, not Emmy wins. The Television Academy’s profile lists his awards record; its entry is the appropriate source for category-specific details. Television Academy and the BFI document the recurring recognition.

6. He was part of an honored ensemble
Boardwalk Empire received Screen Actors Guild ensemble recognition, a distinction that recognizes a cast rather than an individual acting win. Williams’s participation in the series connects his work to this collective achievement while keeping the credit accurately attributed. The SAG-AFTRA Foundation retrospective provides the ensemble-award context.
7. New York City recognized his contribution
In 2017, New York City’s Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment honored Williams with a Made in NY Award. The city announcement connected the honor to his career and contribution to the creative community. It was civic recognition from his hometown, distinct from awards given by entertainment-industry bodies. NYC Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment

8. His body of work reached beyond a single genre or audience
Across The Wire, Boardwalk Empire, films such as 12 Years a Slave, and limited series including When They See Us and Lovecraft Country, Williams appeared in crime, historical and genre storytelling. That range is an editorial way of describing the work, not a formal award or measurable ranking. It helps explain why his legacy is larger than the one role that first comes to mind for many viewers.
