Queen Elizabeth II died on September 8, 2022. Within hours of the announcement, a project called RIP The Queen Official appeared on OpenSea, according to Reuters reporting carried by Investing.com. Reuters also described thousands of Queen-related NFTs listed on the marketplace, while a separate Blockworks report documented a 522-item memorial collection. These are contemporaneous snapshots—not an audited count of all listings, proof of sales for every item, or evidence of royal or OpenSea endorsement.
What Queen Elizabeth NFTs appeared on OpenSea?
News reports published on September 9 and 10, 2022 described multiple collections appearing after the Queen’s death. Their figures refer to different projects and measures, so they should not be combined into one collection total.
| Collection or measure | Reported figure | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|
| RIP The Queen Official | More than 8,000 digital artworks | Reuters, in reporting carried by Investing.com, attributed this figure to that project. It is not a count of sales or all Queen-themed NFTs on OpenSea. Reuters report via Investing.com |
| Queen-related listings on OpenSea | Thousands | Reuters characterized the marketplace activity this way; the report does not establish a verified, platform-wide inventory total. Reuters report via Investing.com |
| RIP Queen Elizabeth II memorial collection | 522 items; 0.23 ETH ($394) in reported sales | Blockworks reported these figures for this separate collection on September 9, 2022. The sales amount is the publication-time snapshot and the dollar conversion as reported then, not a current value. Blockworks report |
The 522 items are not the more-than-8,000 artworks reported for RIP The Queen Official. Nor does an item’s presence in a collection mean it sold. The reports provide no consistent, independently audited dataset for total sales, unique buyers, or trading over time, so the figures cannot support a reliable ranking of which collection was more successful.
How soon did the listings appear?
Reuters reported that RIP The Queen Official appeared within hours of the death announcement. The timing supports describing a rapid response on OpenSea, but the report does not establish when every Queen-related listing was created or how long any particular item remained visible.

Were the OpenSea tribute NFTs official?
The available reporting establishes that the named projects and other Queen-related listings were observed on OpenSea; it does not establish authorization by the Royal Family, an official tribute, or endorsement by OpenSea. A collection name—including the word “Official”—is not proof of affiliation. The contemporaneous coverage also does not verify statements from a creator or OpenSea representative specifically about these collections.

OpenSea’s 2022 copymint description
In an August 9, 2022 post, OpenSea described verification badges and a copymint-detection system. The company said it could detect and remove copies of badged collections within two hours after they appeared on OpenSea. That was a general description of the system, not evidence that OpenSea approved, removed, or took a specific action on either Queen collection. OpenSea’s August 2022 post

Later guidance on delisting and affiliation
OpenSea’s February 2025 help guidance explains that delisting can hide an item from its marketplace without changing the token on the blockchain or removing it from an owner’s wallet. Its May 2025 policy describes moderation options that may limit discovery or transactions, or hide content, and says celebrity references may be allowed when clearly disclosed as unofficial while false affiliation or impersonation may be prohibited. These later materials explain general distinctions between marketplace visibility, blockchain existence, and claimed affiliation; they do not establish the current status of the named collections or the exact rules or actions applied to them in 2022.
