Prince Harry settled his High Court claim against News Group Newspapers (NGN) on 22 January 2025, shortly before trial. NGN apologized and agreed to pay “substantial damages,” but its published apology gave no exact amount. It admitted serious intrusion by The Sun, including unlawful activity by private investigators, and separately apologized for phone hacking, surveillance and misuse of private information at the News of the World. The settlement ended the case without a trial judgment on every disputed allegation.

What did Prince Harry receive?

Harry accepted an apology and substantial damages from NGN, the publisher of The Sun and former publisher of the now-defunct News of the World. The agreement was announced just before the trial was due to begin in London’s High Court.

NGN’s apology did not disclose Harry’s individual damages figure. The Guardian later reported that costs and damages for Harry and fellow claimant Tom Watson together exceeded £10 million; that was a combined reported amount, not a verified individual award. (The Guardian, 24 January 2025)

What did NGN’s apology admit?

The Sun: intrusion and private investigators

NGN apologized for serious intrusion by The Sun into Harry’s private life between 1996 and 2011. Its apology specifically included incidents of unlawful activity by private investigators working for the paper. The published wording was: “NGN offers a full and unequivocal apology to the Duke of Sussex for the serious intrusion by The Sun between 1996 and 2011 into his private life, including incidents of unlawful activities carried out by private investigators working for The Sun.” (Associated Press)

The News of the World: hacking, surveillance and misuse of information

Separately, NGN apologized for phone hacking, surveillance and misuse of private information by journalists and private investigators instructed by them at the News of the World. These are distinct admissions in the apology, not an extension of the specific The Sun wording above. (Associated Press)

Coverage of Harry, Diana and the effect on relationships

NGN also apologized for the effect of extensive coverage and intrusion into Harry’s private life and that of his late mother, Diana, Princess of Wales, particularly during his younger years. It acknowledged distress and damage to relationships, friendships and family. (Associated Press)

The carefully qualified 2006-arrests clause

The apology said NGN’s response to the 2006 arrests and its subsequent actions were regrettable “without any admission of illegality.” That qualification applies to this clause; it does not erase the separate apology’s express acknowledgment of unlawful activity by private investigators working for The Sun. (Associated Press)

A separate apology to Tom Watson

NGN also apologized to Tom Watson, then a former Labour deputy leader and later Lord Watson, for intrusion by the News of the World during his time in government in 2009–2011. It acknowledged that information suggesting Watson was receiving confidential information was false. (The Guardian, 24 January 2025)

What the settlement did not decide

Because the case settled before trial, there was no judgment resolving all disputed allegations in Harry’s claim against NGN. Allegations about institutional knowledge, evidence destruction and a cover-up were advanced by Harry’s legal team; they were not all established by a trial verdict. NGN disputed claims about destruction of evidence and said it would have challenged them at trial. (The Guardian, 24 January 2025)

Harry and Watson’s solicitors called the result a “monumental victory.” That was the claimant-side legal team’s characterization, not a judge’s finding. In its 22 January 2025 statement, the team also asserted that NGN had used more than 100 private investigators over at least 16 years on more than 35,000 occasions, and had spent more than £1 billion in payouts and legal costs. Those figures are assertions by the claimants’ solicitors, not statistics adjudicated at a trial of Harry’s settled claim. (Hamlins, 22 January 2025)

Why was the timing described as a surprise?

The agreement came shortly before the scheduled trial, so reporting described the last-minute settlement as unexpected. “Surprise” describes the timing, not a legal conclusion. The legal outcome was an agreement: NGN apologized and Harry accepted substantial damages, while the court did not conduct a trial to resolve every contested issue.

Which legal case did this end?

This settlement ended Harry’s claim against NGN, not his separate case against Associated Newspapers Limited. A High Court judgment page dated 7 July 2026 lists Harry as a claimant in that separate proceeding. (Courts and Tribunals Judiciary)
