What did Pete Evans say about his downfall?
PerthNow’s Kellie Balaam reported on 1 August 2025 that Evans discussed his career and media treatment on American doctor Will Cole’s podcast, The Art of Being Well. The podcast recording or a transcript was not independently verified for this account, so his words here are those reproduced by PerthNow.
Evans said: “Up until that time, I was celebrated, adored by the Australian media and public until I started talking about paleo, ancestral diets.” He described the response as immediate: “I was attacked straight away. It was bizarre, I was like, why is this so challenging, triggering, why is this happening, because I started sharing anecdotal stories of people improving their health who had adopted this way of life.”
He also recalled criticism of his qualifications, saying: “Dietitians would say this is completely unfounded, dangerous, he’s not a doctor, he’s just a chef, even though the information I was sharing was from doctors,” PerthNow reported. These are Evans’s recollections of the criticism and his interpretation of its causes; the account does not establish that paleo advocacy was the sole reason his public standing changed.

How prominent was Evans before the backlash?
Evans built a public profile as a chef, restaurateur, television presenter and cookbook author. His official biography describes him in those terms and says he has “around 25” books to his name; that figure is self-reported. His television work included a long-running role as a judge on Seven’s cooking competition My Kitchen Rules.
When did Evans leave My Kitchen Rules?
Evans’s departure from the show was reported in May 2020. PerthNow later placed it in the broader story of his decline in public favour. A contemporaneous AdNews report said Seven had parted ways with him and described the split as amicable, while also referring to the programme’s ratings context. The available reporting does not establish one definitive reason—such as controversy or ratings—for the decision.
What actions did regulators and platforms take?
TGA infringement notices in 2020
On 24 April 2020, the TGA said Peter Evans Chef Pty Ltd had received two infringement notices totalling $25,200 over alleged advertising breaches involving the BioCharger. The agency said it had received complaints about an April 9 Facebook livestream that made a claim relating to coronavirus, which it described as having “no apparent foundation.” The TGA stated: “Any claim that references COVID-19 is a restricted representation under therapeutic goods legislation, and is of significant concern to the TGA given the heightened public concern about the pandemic.” These were alleged breaches described by the regulator, not a court judgment.
Further TGA notices in 2021
On 25 May 2021, the TGA said it issued Peter Evans Chef Pty Ltd infringement notices totalling $79,920 and issued a directions notice to the company and Evans. The agency’s release concerned alleged unlawful advertising involving the BioCharger, hyperbaric oxygen therapy chambers and two oral medicines that it said were not included in the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods, as well as alleged endorsement implications involving static magnet products and hyperbaric chambers. The notices document regulatory action over alleged advertising breaches; they do not amount to a court ruling or establish the efficacy of any product.

Facebook and publisher decisions in 2020
ABC News reported on 24 December 2020 that Facebook had permanently removed Evans’s page after repeated violations of its policies concerning COVID-19 content. ABC also reported that Evans’s publisher ended its contract after a post featuring a neo-Nazi symbol, and that several retailers said they would not sell his products. Evans later denied using the symbol intentionally, according to ABC. These were platform, publisher and retailer decisions, distinct from the TGA’s regulatory notices.
