His role in Deadwood
Jason played Con Stapleton, a card dealer who briefly becomes sheriff in HBO’s Deadwood. TVLine reports that he appeared in 26 episodes and returned for the 2019 reunion movie. Stapleton was one part of a career built largely on memorable supporting roles rather than a single leading-character identity.
Why he was associated with John Carpenter
Jason appeared in Carpenter films including They Live, Escape from L.A. and In the Mouth of Madness, according to TV Insider; the Television Academy also lists They Live and Escape from L.A. among his credits. Carpenter’s tribute made their personal connection explicit. As quoted by TVLine, Carpenter wrote: “Peter Jason, one of the great character actors in cinema, has died. His first movie was Howard Hawks’ Rio Lobo. He was a dear friend and I’ll miss him terribly.”

The phrase “John Carpenter favorite” is best understood as shorthand for their repeated professional association and Carpenter’s affectionate remembrance, not as a formal ranking. TV Insider also notes Jason’s work with director Walter Hill.
A career spanning film and television
Jason’s first feature appearance was in Howard Hawks’s Rio Lobo, TV Insider reports. His screen credits ranged across genres and formats: the Television Academy lists 48 Hrs., Mortal Kombat, Milk and Queen City, alongside Deadwood. TV Insider identifies his 48 Hrs. role as a bartender and his The Karate Kid role as a soccer coach.
He began acting in a high-school play, then pursued stage and college work before taking small television roles in the late 1960s, according to TV Insider. Those early steps led to decades of character parts across movies and television.
