He plays Saxon Ratliff; Sam Nivola plays Saxon’s younger brother, Lochlan. Spoilers for Season 3, Episode 6, “Denials,” follow.
What did Patrick Schwarzenegger mean by “Whoa”?
Schwarzenegger said he and his castmate did not have the scripts for those episodes when he accepted the role. When he reached them, he recalled thinking: “And then I started to read the scripts and, yeah, when I got to episode 5 and episode 6, it was like, ‘Whoa. This is wild. This is crazy.’” E! attributed the remarks to an Entertainment Weekly interview published March 23, 2025; E!’s report appeared March 24.
His surprise was about the unfolding story between the fictional brothers, Saxon and Lochlan. It was not a statement about Schwarzenegger and Nivola, who are the actors portraying them.
What happens between Saxon and Lochlan?
Major plot spoiler for Episode 6, “Denials.” After Saxon and Lochlan kiss in Episode 5, Episode 6 reveals a sexual encounter during a drug- and alcohol-fueled night with Chloe, played by Charlotte Le Bon. Saxon’s memory of the night is incomplete. Chloe tells him, “I didn’t force him to jerk you off,” and E!’s account says Lochlan later recalls the moment.
#1 Best Overall
The episode’s revelation is the context behind headlines describing the storyline as incestuous. The characters are brothers; the reporting does not suggest that the actors are related or that the events happened outside the fictional series.
How did Schwarzenegger respond to the material?
Schwarzenegger said he trusted creator Mike White’s writing, pointing to White’s success on earlier seasons and other shows. “I have full faith and trust in Mike White and his writing and what he’s done so successfully on other seasons and on other shows,” he said. He also recalled White texting him: “It’s going to be great.” Schwarzenegger added that White expected the storyline to start a conversation. E! quoted these comments from the same Entertainment Weekly interview.

How did Sam Nivola interpret Lochlan’s behavior?
Nivola offered his own reading of the character, not a definitive explanation of the story’s meaning. “I think it comes from a sense of insecurity,” he said in remarks to Variety quoted by E!. He described Lochlan as looking up to his siblings, trying to work out who he would become, and wanting to connect with Saxon. In Nivola’s view, that attempt was misguided; he did not want Lochlan to come across as evil or malicious.
Nivola also described filming the scene as weird because he and Schwarzenegger were friends. He said the scene went smoothly, that White helped calm him, and that he trusted his scene partners, according to E!’s separate report.

Why the comments drew attention
The “Whoa” remark captures Schwarzenegger’s reaction to encountering the episode scripts; the storyline itself is the provocation. His comments also clarify that he approached the material with trust in White, while Nivola’s remarks explain how he chose to understand Lochlan’s motives. Those are the actors’ perspectives, not a single settled interpretation of the characters or the episode.
