Paul McCartney’s friendly jokes about Bruce Springsteen’s marathon concerts and working-man image came during a formal awards presentation—not a standalone roast. On May 23, 2024, McCartney presented Springsteen with the Ivors Academy Fellowship at the Ivor Novello Awards in London.
Why McCartney and Springsteen were onstage together
The ceremony took place at Grosvenor House in London. McCartney presented Springsteen with the Ivors Academy Fellowship, which NME described as the Academy’s highest honour. Springsteen was the first international songwriter to receive it, according to NME’s May 24, 2024 coverage.

The award was the occasion; the teasing was McCartney’s lighthearted introduction. The exchange was part of the presentation, not a separate roast event.
What Paul McCartney said about Bruce Springsteen
NME reported that McCartney opened with: “Like Bruce’s concerts, I’m going to keep this brief,” playing on Springsteen’s reputation for long live shows.

McCartney also joked, “I blame you man, we used to play an hour, an hour and a half.” NME placed the remark among his jokes about Springsteen’s concert lengths.
The headline of NME’s report quoted another punchline: “He’s never worked a day in his life,” a joke about Springsteen’s American working-man persona. It was affectionate teasing, not a serious claim about Springsteen’s life or work.

McCartney also joked about where Springsteen’s talent might place him among the Beatles. Taken together, the remarks poked fun at the contrast between Springsteen’s working-man image, his lengthy performances and the stature of his songwriting.
Why the Fellowship mattered
The recognition was more than a comic awards-show moment. NME called the Ivors Academy Fellowship the Academy’s highest honour and reported that Springsteen was its first international songwriter recipient. Its May 24, 2024 report also described the Academy as marking 80 years and said McCartney had received the Fellowship 20 years earlier.

In his acceptance remarks, Springsteen reportedly referred to his first Hammersmith show as having taken place roughly 50 years earlier. That is an approximate figure reported by NME in 2024, not an independently verified date here.

The available account of the jokes and ceremony details comes from NME’s reporting. The remarks quoted here should therefore be read as quotations reported by NME; a primary video or official transcript was not available to verify the wording independently. The central point is clear from that coverage: McCartney’s jokes were a brief, playful introduction to Springsteen’s Fellowship presentation.
