Paul McCartney published a tribute to Brian Wilson on 12 June 2025, the day after the Beach Boys co-founder died aged 82. McCartney praised Wilson’s musical imagination, said he loved him and ended with a simple thank-you.
What did Paul McCartney say about Brian Wilson?
In a post titled “Paul on Brian Wilson,” published on McCartney’s official website, he wrote: “Brian had that mysterious sense of musical genius that made his songs so achingly special. The notes he heard in his head and passed to us were simple and brilliant at the same time. I loved him, and was privileged to be around his bright shining light for a little while. How we will continue without Brian Wilson, ‘God Only Knows’. Thank you, Brian.”

The tribute joins personal affection to an assessment of Wilson’s craft: McCartney admired the ideas Wilson seemed to hear internally and the directness with which he turned them into memorable songs.
Why did McCartney admire Wilson’s music?
The connection was musical as well as personal. The Associated Press reported that McCartney had cited the Beach Boys’ 1966 album Pet Sounds as a direct inspiration on the Beatles and named “God Only Knows” among his favorite songs. Wilson co-founded the Beach Boys and worked as an arranger and co-writer on songs including “I Get Around,” “Help Me, Rhonda” and “Good Vibrations,” according to the Recording Academy.

That influence helps explain the particular weight of McCartney’s words. He was not offering only a general memorial to a celebrated contemporary; he was recognizing a musician whose songwriting and arrangements had affected the Beatles’ own work.
