That resemblance has made the fruit a visual shorthand for Palestinian identity, resistance and solidarity—but the story of exactly when it became a symbol is not settled. Its uses today range from artworks and demonstrations to social-media posts and the watermelon emoji.
Why does a watermelon represent Palestine?
The connection is visual: cut open, a watermelon displays the four colours of the Palestinian flag. The Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates describes the flag’s colours and history; its account places their selection with the Arab nationalist Literary Club in Istanbul in 1909, while the Palestine Liberation Organization adopted the flag in 1964. The ministry’s flag history is separate from the less certain history of the fruit as a political symbol.
The watermelon’s appeal is also practical: it can evoke the flag without depicting it directly. That association has lent the fruit a place in Palestinian self-representation and in expressions of solidarity by people outside Palestine. The image does not carry one fixed meaning for everyone who uses it.
When did the watermelon become a Palestinian symbol?
The popular origin story connects watermelon imagery to restrictions on Palestinian flags and flag-coloured political art after 1967. But the exact beginning—and whether the fruit was used continuously from that period—is not universally agreed. NPR’s account of the symbol likewise cautions against treating a single origin story as definitive.

The 1980 Ramallah gallery account
The Associated Press reports that in 1980 the Israeli military shut down a gallery in Ramallah run by three artists. Palestinian artist Sliman Mansour recalled being summoned by an Israeli officer, who told him: “It is forbidden to organize an exhibition without permission from the military, and secondly, it is forbidden to paint in the colors of the Palestinian flag.” According to Mansour’s recollection, the officer named a watermelon as one example of art that would violate the rules.
AP also recounts stories of young men carrying watermelon slices in public as an act of defiance. Those accounts help explain the symbolism, but they do not establish a single, definitive first use. Treat the 1980 gallery story as a reported recollection, not proof that every later appearance descends from one event. The Associated Press report gives the fuller account.

A documented artwork milestone
Palestinian artist Khaled Hourani made The Story of the Watermelon in 2007 for the Subjective Atlas of Palestine project. This is a documented artwork milestone in the symbol’s history, not evidence that Hourani originated every use of the watermelon.
What do the colours and image mean now?
Contemporary uses include art, shirts, graffiti, posters, pins, stickers, banners, balloons and online posts. Al Jazeera describes the watermelon among Palestinian symbols used in public and popular culture. In one reported 2023 example, the activist group Zazim put watermelon-form Palestinian flags on Tel Aviv service taxis after police were instructed to confiscate Palestinian flags from public places. People also interpret the image in different ways. For Jerusalem-born author Mahdi Sabbagh, as quoted by AP, “When I see a watermelon, I think of the unbreakable spirit of our people.” Middle Eastern studies expert Mayssoun Sukarieh said she had “never cared for flags or nationalism,” describing the Palestinian flag for her as “more of a symbol of resistance than it is of nationalism.” Those are individual perspectives, not a universal definition.

Artist Shawn Escarciga has used watermelon seeds in a coalition design to express resilience: “You might be able to smash a watermelon. You might be able to destroy a fruit, but the seed is a little harder to crush.” In that reading, the seed suggests life that can grow from something small. Across these examples, the symbol can speak to identity, resistance, solidarity or the right to express oneself; those meanings can overlap without being interchangeable.

Activists have used the watermelon emoji as shorthand for Palestine, including in calls for a cease-fire in Gaza. Its familiar colour pattern makes the reference legible in a small online image, where a flag or longer statement may not fit the format.

Jillian York, the Electronic Frontier Foundation’s director for international freedom of expression, told AP that she saw the emoji’s widespread use as a stand-in as a notable uptick in censorship of Palestinian content. That is York’s assessment, not a measured finding about every platform. AP notes that shadow banning can be difficult to establish and describes suppression concerns as claims made by advocates and digital-rights groups. The emoji’s use does not prove that a particular post was suppressed or that the symbol reliably bypasses moderation.
