Her January 2018 interview with Scroll offers a first-person account of those choices, alongside director Ritesh Batra’s perspective on casting her in The Lunchbox.
Why The Test Case appealed to her
In The Test Case, Kaur plays Captain Shikha Sharma, a woman training to become a special-forces commando. The series places Shikha at the center of a fictional test of women’s place in combat roles; it should not be confused with a real military milestone.
Kaur told Scroll on January 24, 2018 that the premise caught her immediately: “A one-line description of the show really had me – ‘first woman commando in the special forces in the army’.”
Her connection to the setting came from family and childhood, not military service. Kaur said her father was an Army officer, so Army vocabulary, protocol and familiar environments were part of her upbringing. She also made clear that she had never served in the Army. The Scroll profile describes months of physical and mental training for the part and demanding shoot days. In a separate NDTV India video interview from March 2, 2018, she also discussed preparation and playing a combat soldier.

The Lunchbox: a small exchange with a wide emotional reach
In The Lunchbox, Kaur plays Ila, a Mumbai housewife whose lunchbox is mistakenly delivered to a government employee. The mistake begins a correspondence through notes tucked into the meals. The story’s scale is domestic and intimate: its central connection develops through an everyday object and written messages.
Scroll’s 2018 interview includes director Ritesh Batra’s account of meeting Kaur and preparing the role with her. “But the first time I met Nimrat, she seemed the right fit for Ila,” he said. He also described rehearsals and working through the script together. Those are Batra’s observations; they are distinct from Kaur’s own comments about her work.

In a later first-person account, The Indian Express reported on December 30, 2020 that Kaur discussed how she landed her first major film role, including Batra having seen her stage work and the casting process. That retrospective adds Kaur’s recollection of how the opportunity came about, rather than relying only on the director’s account in the earlier interview.
Airlift: a fictional family within a real-life-inspired event
In Airlift, Kaur plays Amrita, the wife of the fictional businessman portrayed by Akshay Kumar. The film is loosely based on the evacuation of civilians from Kuwait after Iraq’s invasion. It is a dramatic film inspired by a historical event, not a documentary, and the historical evacuation should not be reduced to the actions of its central fictional character.

Kaur told Scroll that two elements drew her to the project: its real-life basis and Kumar’s role as its lead. “I loved that it was based on a real life story and the fact that Akshay was helming the project,” she said.

That contrast is useful because the roles ask for different kinds of attention: Shikha’s public test in a male-dominated institution, Ila’s private correspondence, and Amrita’s place within a story shaped around a larger evacuation. Kaur’s comments connect each role to a different point of interest—personal familiarity with the military setting, the work of character and rehearsal, or the historical inspiration and lead actor.
