Critics differed on how much the performances redeem it: India Today rated the film 2.5 stars, while The Indian Express gave it 1 out of 5. Both reviews point to problems with the story’s execution.
What is Nishabdham about?
Directed by Hemant Madhukar, the 2020 Telugu mystery-thriller follows a murder at a reputedly haunted Seattle villa. A world-famous cello player is dead, and investigators must determine whether a supernatural force or someone who knew him is responsible. Anushka Shetty plays Sakshi, a deaf artist and witness; Madhavan plays Anthony, the cellist at the center of the case. The setup gives the film two possible sources of danger—something otherworldly and a human culprit—without requiring viewers to know more going in. Prime Video’s title listing describes the premise, and India Today’s review identifies the central characters.
Does the mystery work?
Not reliably, according to the two contemporary reviews. India Today’s Logesh Balachandran saw potential in the premise but criticized hazy twists, long conversations, songs that slow the pace, and weak investigative scenes. Those flaws matter especially in a mystery: clues and police work need to make the suspense feel earned, while turns in the story need to clarify or deepen the central question. Here, Balachandran felt the execution fell short of that standard.
Manoj Kumar R’s Indian Express review was harsher, rating the film 1 out of 5 and describing it as dull, with writing that leaves the characters disengaging. The two reviews are not identical verdicts, but they converge on a key weakness: the film’s plot and pacing do not consistently sustain interest. Balachandran’s summary was that it could have been better, despite being a one-time watch.

Are the performances worth watching for?
They are the clearest point in the film’s favor in India Today’s assessment. Balachandran singled out Shetty and Madhavan as the actors who hold the film together, even as the twists and investigative scenes disappoint. That is a qualified endorsement of the leads, not evidence that the mystery itself succeeds. The Indian Express review’s much lower rating reflects a less forgiving response to the writing and overall experience.
The film’s treatment of Sakshi also deserves attention: she is a deaf witness, and a detective’s line quoted in The Indian Express review—“Just what I need. A mute for a witness.”—is dismissive. It is dialogue from the film, not an endorsement of that attitude. The line may strike viewers as needlessly insensitive, particularly in a story that makes a disabled character’s testimony central to a murder investigation.

Is Nishabdham worth watching?
If the haunted-house premise and Shetty or Madhavan are enough to interest you, India Today’s 2.5-star review suggests a passable one-time watch. If you want a tightly paced mystery with clear clues and persuasive investigative logic, the cited reviews offer reason to lower expectations. The criticism is not that the film lacks a hook; it is that the writing, twists, and momentum do not make the most of it.
The ratings indicate a mixed-to-negative critical response, not a broad audience consensus. When accessed, Rotten Tomatoes’ listing showed one critic review and fewer than 50 audience ratings, too little to support a reliable claim about what viewers generally think.
