Nicole Kidman received the American Film Institute’s 49th Life Achievement Award at a Hollywood gala on April 27, 2024. Meryl Streep presented the career honor, and Kidman accepted to a standing ovation. Their work together on Big Little Lies was part of the evening’s story—but the award recognized Kidman’s broader career, not a single series.
What happened at the AFI tribute?
The ceremony took place at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. AFI’s recap, published the following day, records Streep presenting the award and Kidman accepting amid a standing ovation. The event brought together collaborators, family members and other performers to celebrate Kidman’s work.

Among the announced participants were Zoe Saldaña, Aaron Sorkin, Keith Urban and Reese Witherspoon. Hugh Jackman, Jane Campion, Jimmy Fallon, Cate Blanchett, George Miller, Baz Luhrmann and Russell Crowe sent taped messages. AFI also listed Morgan Freeman, Naomi Watts and Streep among the presenters.
AFI said gala attendees received a commemorative tribute book about Kidman’s career. The announcement describes it as a gift for guests, not as a retail product.

What did Meryl Streep say about Nicole Kidman?
Streep spoke about Kidman’s willingness to take on demanding roles, framing it not as bravery but as love for the work. As the Associated Press reported, Streep said: “People call it bravery when an actress bares all and leaps off into the unknown and she dives deep into the darker parts of what it is to be a human being. But I don’t think it’s bravery. I think it’s love. I think she just loves it.”
Streep also recalled the first day she and Kidman worked together on HBO’s Big Little Lies. That connection made the series a natural reference in a tribute built around Kidman’s range and career, rather than the sole focus of the honor.

How does Big Little Lies fit into Kidman’s career?
AFI lists Big Little Lies as a television credit spanning 2017–2019 and identifies Kidman as both a star and producer. Streep joined the series in its second season, and her ceremony remarks drew on their experience working together. AFI’s award, however, was a career-wide recognition of Kidman’s contributions to film.
What did Kidman say in her acceptance speech?
Kidman thanked the storytellers who gave her opportunities to play unconventional women and described filmmaking as a privilege. AFI transcribed her words: “It is a privilege to make films. And glorious to have made films and television with these storytellers who allowed me to run wild and be free and play all of these unconventional women. Thank you for making me better at my craft and giving me a place, however temporary, in this world. Thank you for inviting me into your movie families. Thank you for my childhood dream that became a reality.”

What does the AFI Life Achievement Award recognize?
AFI says its Board of Trustees established the award in 1973, and that it is presented to one honoree each year. Its criteria call for a recipient whose talent has fundamentally advanced film, whose accomplishment has been recognized by scholars, critics, peers and the public, and whose work has stood the test of time. AFI described Kidman as the first Australian actor to receive the honor.
AFI announced Kidman as the recipient in November 2022. The presentation was first scheduled for June 10, 2023, then rescheduled; the gala ultimately took place on April 27, 2024. In an April 18, 2024 announcement, AFI President and CEO Bob Gazzale called Kidman “a true screen icon” and praised her as a “risk taker” whose performances bring something new.
Did the gala raise money for AFI?
AFI reported that the 2024 gala raised more than $2 million and said proceeds from the Life Achievement Award support the nonprofit institute. That figure is AFI’s report of the event’s fundraising, not an independently audited total presented in the event recap.
