The proposed Elon Musk–Mark Zuckerberg cage match never took place: the two men did not agree on a firm date or an official event. Zuckerberg said Musk was not serious and kept changing the proposal; Musk mocked Zuckerberg and suggested he had backed out. Those were competing public accounts, not proof of either man’s private motives.
How the challenge began
In June 2023, Musk publicly said he was willing to fight Zuckerberg after criticizing Meta’s plans for a social platform competing with Twitter. Zuckerberg answered, “send me location,” and Musk named a Las Vegas venue. Reuters described the exchange as public bluster amid rivalry between their platforms and noted that Zuckerberg had trained in jiujitsu. Reuters via Investing.com, June 2023
Why did the proposed fight stall?
The central obstacle was basic: no date and official event were mutually confirmed. The public proposals changed over time, while the men disagreed about what had been settled.
Zuckerberg’s account
Zuckerberg said he had suggested August 26 but Musk had not confirmed it. In August, he said Musk would not settle on a date, had raised the possibility of surgery, and was asking for a practice round at Zuckerberg’s home instead of an official match. Zuckerberg wrote on Threads: “I think we can all agree Elon isn’t serious, and it’s time to move on.” He also said he remained willing to fight if Musk agreed to a real date and official event. Musk’s public response
Musk taunted Zuckerberg on X, calling him “a chicken” and implying that Zuckerberg had backed out because he would not agree to a practice round. That was Musk’s characterization, not an independently established reason the match failed to happen. Ars Technica, August 14, 2023
What had—and had not—been planned
The pair discussed several event details, but the discussions did not amount to a confirmed booking.
