Western Australian photographer Hamish Stubbs paired footage of a Pilbara lightning storm with “leavemealone” by Fred again.. and Baby Keem, hoping the video would catch the producer’s attention and draw him to Western Australia. PerthNow reported the story on 5 March 2024; it did not establish whether Fred again.. saw or responded to the clip.
Who made the Pilbara lightning video?
Hamish Stubbs, a nature and wildlife photographer from New Zealand who was living in Dunsborough at the time of PerthNow’s report, filmed the storm and posted a short edit to Instagram Reels. The report said he had more than 20,000 followers then; that was a figure reported in 2024, not an independently verified or current count.
Where was the storm filmed?
The footage was filmed at Cloudbreak mine, about 100 km north of Newman, according to PerthNow. Stubbs filmed the storm on Saturday night and posted the Reel on Sunday. Those dates refer to the weekend described in the outlet’s 5 March 2024 report.
What song is in the video?
The Reel was synced to “leavemealone,” credited to Fred again.. and Baby Keem. Stubbs told PerthNow, “When I was filming it, I just knew straight away that song would work perfectly.” He also described the storm as “One of the best electrical storms I’ve seen in a long time.”

Did Fred again.. see the video?
PerthNow reported Stubbs’s hope that the clip would get Fred again..’s attention and draw him west. The report does not confirm that the producer saw the video, responded to it, or planned a visit. The story therefore documents Stubbs’s intention, not a reaction from the artist.
What was happening with the weather?
PerthNow said slow-moving thunderstorms passed through northern Western Australia during the weekend and that a severe-weather warning for parts of the state was later cancelled. The report mentioned forecast winds of up to 100 km/h in that historical warning. This describes conditions reported in March 2024, not a current warning or forecast.

Lightning photography in remote country
The story does not identify Stubbs’s camera or lens. For separate safety context, ABC News reported in 2020 that photographer Jordan Cantelo recommended using a telephoto lens to reduce the risk of injury when photographing lightning. His advice should not be read as a description of Stubbs’s equipment or as a guarantee of safety.
Cantelo also advised storm photographers to prepare for remote conditions. Speaking to ABC News, he recommended a reliable vehicle, a personal locator beacon, and enough water and food for a couple of days, and said to tell someone where you are going. ABC News’s 2022 account of storm chasers in the Pilbara and Kimberley likewise describes unpredictable storms, remote travel and extreme heat; it recounts a photographer returning to a car when lightning came close. These are field experiences, not substitutes for official weather warnings or local safety guidance.
