Peter Frampton was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as a Performer in 2024, after decades of eligibility without appearing on a ballot. He said he had stopped expecting it—and offered a personal theory for the delay—but the Hall has not given an official explanation for why his nomination came when it did.
What Frampton said about the long wait
In a Rolling Stone interview published April 22, 2024, Frampton recalled being eligible for about three decades without appearing on a Rock Hall ballot. He had put the possibility out of his mind and thought he might never be inducted. “It’s something I never expected,” he said.
Frampton speculated that rock critics’ influence in the nomination process and the perception that his 1970s success was “too big” may have counted against him. He was describing his own interpretation, not reporting an explanation from the Hall. No official account establishes why he waited so long for a nomination.
What the Hall’s process does—and does not—explain
The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation’s February 10, 2024 nominee announcement named Frampton as a first-time nominee. Under the Foundation’s published rule, an artist or band could be considered once at least 25 years had passed since its first commercial recording. That threshold establishes eligibility, not a promise of nomination or induction at a particular time.

The Foundation said ballots went to an international voting body of more than 1,000 artists, historians and music-industry members. Its stated considerations include musical impact and influence, career length and depth, body of work, innovation, and superiority in style and technique. Those are general criteria; they do not reveal why Frampton was not nominated earlier or identify a single factor behind his 2024 selection.
Why fan support surprised him
Frampton also said the level of support from fans caught him off guard. He credited Sheryl Crow’s invitation to perform with her at the previous year’s induction ceremony with bringing him before more people. “She helped me immensely,” he said, describing the effect as “a real wonderful shock.”

What the induction recognized
The Hall’s official Frampton profile lists him as a 2024 Performer inductee and names Roger Daltrey as his inducter. The Hall emphasizes the impact of Frampton Comes Alive!, the landmark 1976 double album that brought Frampton’s guitar playing to a mainstream audience. Daltrey’s profile statement calls him “a restless soul” who stayed true to his love of the guitar.

The 2024 ceremony program essay places the album within a career spanning six decades: Frampton’s early work with The Herd and Humble Pie, solo recordings, session playing, and later instrumental releases. It also notes that he continued performing while living with inclusion body myositis. That detail is historical context from the 2024 program, not an update on his present health.
