Choose products for your needs rather than adding steps; too many products can irritate skin. This is general U.S.-oriented guidance from the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), not a diagnosis or personalized treatment plan.
What a basic skincare routine needs
Start with three basics: a gentle cleanser, a moisturizer, and sunscreen. AAD’s 2025 guide recommends this uncomplicated approach and emphasizes consistency over a 10-step routine. For a simple starting point, it suggests a fragrance-free moisturizer and daily broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. AAD’s basic routine guidance
What order should you apply skincare products in?
- Cleanse: Wash with a gentle cleanser, then pat your skin dry.
- Treat: Apply any medication or targeted treatment as directed.
- Moisturize and protect: Apply moisturizer and/or sunscreen.
- Makeup: Apply it afterward if you choose to wear it.
Using too many products, especially several anti-aging products at once, may irritate skin and make signs of aging more noticeable. AAD’s product-order guidance
How to choose sunscreen
AAD recommends seeking shade, wearing sun-protective clothing, and applying a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher to skin not covered by clothing. Sun protection is recommended regardless of complexion. Treat these as label checks, not a guarantee that a product will suit everyone. AAD’s sun-protection guidance

Moisturizer for acne-prone skin
Acne-prone skin can still benefit from moisturizer. Treatments including benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, adapalene, tazarotene, tretinoin, and isotretinoin may dry or irritate skin; moisturizer may help make them easier to tolerate. Look for “oil-free,” “non-comedogenic,” or “won’t clog pores” on the label. This does not mean moisturizer by itself treats acne. AAD’s guidance on moisturizer for acne-prone skin
Acne treatments and retinoids
Topical retinoids can clear pores and treat blackheads, whiteheads, and some pimples; they may also help with dark spots after acne clears. Adapalene is available without a prescription, while tazarotene, tretinoin, and trifarotene are prescription topical retinoids. Benzoyl peroxide reduces acne-causing bacteria and may be combined with another treatment. AAD’s acne-treatment overview

Reduce irritation carefully
Retinoids and other acne treatments can irritate skin. AAD suggests discussing a smaller amount, less frequent use, or applying moisturizer first with a dermatologist’s help. Use sun protection while using topical retinoids. Retinol is a type of retinoid often found in over-the-counter products for tone, pigmentation, and texture; it is not interchangeable with prescription acne retinoids, and formulations differ. AAD’s retinoid guidance
Pregnancy and isotretinoin
AAD says retinoids should not be used during pregnancy. If you take isotretinoin, follow your prescriber’s directions. AAD recommends gentle cleansing, moisturizer, and sun protection during treatment, and advises avoiding potentially irritating retinol, exfoliants, and other listed ingredients. AAD’s isotretinoin skincare guidance

When to see a dermatologist
Routine products are not a substitute for evaluation of persistent or severe acne. AAD describes several effective treatments and advises seeing a dermatologist if acne does not clear. A clinician can help determine an appropriate treatment rather than relying on product changes alone. AAD’s acne-treatment guidance
