Season 5 aired in 2020, Paul Staehle and Karine Martins were already facing serious problems. They did not appear in the season’s tell-all. Their divorce was reportedly finalized on April 13, 2026, but current custody arrangements for their two sons have not been established in the available reporting.
What was happening during Season 5?
The season followed Paul and Karine as they moved from Brazil to Kentucky. Entertainment Tonight reported in 2020 that Karine was unhappy with the move, Paul had not found work, and she had consulted an immigration lawyer about returning to Brazil with their son Pierre. Those details describe what was reported at the time, not a complete account of what happened privately between the couple.
Why were Paul and Karine absent from the tell-all?
They did not take part in the Season 5 tell-all. In an October 2, 2020 interview, host Shaun Robinson said their situation was “very complicated and sensitive” and that it was fresh when the special was being made. She said the show wanted to give them space to work through it. Robinson’s explanation to Entertainment Tonight was about their circumstances at that moment; it did not predict the eventual outcome of their marriage.
What happened to their family after the show?
Paul and Karine have two sons, Pierre and Ethan. TLC announced Pierre’s birth, and later coverage identifies both children.

TV Insider reported that Paul and Karine lost custody of their sons in 2022, while noting that the current custody arrangement is unclear. The outlet also said that Karine’s March 2025 GoFundMe stated the boys were with Paul’s cousin at that time. That was Karine’s reported claim about the situation then; it does not establish where the children are now or the present legal arrangement.
Are Paul and Karine still married?
No. TV Insider and TMZ reported that their divorce was finalized on April 13, 2026. TMZ, citing court documents, reported that they had been separated for more than a year, had lived apart for over 60 days, and that the marriage was irretrievably broken with no reasonable prospect of reconciliation.
