SenLinYu’s Alchemised began as a rewrite of the author’s Manacled, but it is now a distinct, traditionally published dark fantasy novel: its setting, magic, and characters are original, rather than a direct edition of the Harry Potter fanfiction. SenLinYu began rewriting the story around Christmas 2022; the US publisher released Alchemised on September 23, 2025.
How Manacled became Alchemised
Manacled was a Harry Potter fanfiction centered on the Dramione pairing, with inspiration from The Handmaid’s Tale. SenLinYu told The Guardian that they began rewriting it around Christmas 2022. In the process, third-party intellectual property was removed and the story was reshaped as a new world and novel.
The result, Alchemised, takes place in Paladia, a society shaped by necromancy, alchemy, and powerful guild families. Its protagonist is Helena Marino, a former Resistance healer and alchemist captured after the Resistance’s defeat. With her memory damaged, her captors suspect she may know the Resistance’s final plan and send her to the High Reeve, a powerful necromancer.
The connection to Manacled is part of the book’s origin, not a reason to treat the published novel as the same text under a new cover. SenLinYu has described writing about war trauma, coercion, moral limits, and the compromises people make under pressure. The Guardian characterizes the book as combining those concerns with an obsessive relationship; editor Emily Archbold told Bustle that the story looks closely at the costs of war beyond the front lines.

These points establish a rewrite relationship, not a one-to-one map between every character, scene, or plot element in the two works. SenLinYu has also resisted a simple genre label: in The Guardian interview, they said, “I’ve never really thought of it as a romantasy,” while describing it as a love story. “Dark fantasy with a love story” is a more careful shorthand than assuming it is conventional romance or romantasy.

Is Manacled still available?
No. SenLinYu’s FAQ says Manacled has been unavailable since January 1, 2025. The author permits personal binding but prohibits commercial printing, sale, and distribution of fanworks, with a limited exception for personal gifting; fanworks must remain free of paywalls. Readers should not treat unauthorized printed copies or merchandise as official products. The author FAQ is the source for the current policy.
Alchemised is the authorized published novel. The publisher listings identify the available editions: the US editions and UK editions.

Content warnings and what to expect
This is dark material, not simply a fantasy romance with a grim backdrop. The Guardian reported that the author’s website listed 12 warnings, including human experimentation, medical torture, eugenics, cannibalism, and necrophilia. Those examples are not the full list; consult SenLinYu’s current warnings and FAQ if you need to assess specific content before reading. War trauma and coercion are also central to the book’s reported themes.
SenLinYu has said, “I was never wanting to write a relationship that was supposed to be aspirational,” in the Guardian interview. That distinction matters for readers deciding whether the relationship dynamic is right for them: the author frames it as neither a model relationship nor a conventional romance ideal.

What is known about a film adaptation?
In September 2025, Legendary Entertainment said it had “preemptively acquired the rights to develop a feature film based on Alchemised” in a company announcement. That confirms an acquisition of development rights, not that a film has entered production. The Guardian described the rights deal as seven figures, but Legendary’s post does not state a dollar amount. The cited announcement provides no confirmed cast, director, production start, or release date.

Penguin Random House’s US product page reported that Alchemised had sold over one million copies; that is the publisher’s sales statement, not an independently audited figure. Penguin Books UK’s author biography says SenLinYu’s work has been published in 20 languages; that figure refers to the author’s work overall and does not establish that Alchemised itself has 20 language editions.
