The departure came amid a public governance dispute, but the parties gave different accounts of what led to it. A UK regulator criticized how the conflict played out publicly without deciding individual bullying allegations, and a defamation claim reported in April 2026 has not been shown to have reached a court outcome.
What Sentebale does—and why Harry helped found it
Harry and Prince Seeiso of Lesotho founded Sentebale in 2006 in memory of their mothers, including Diana, Princess of Wales. The charity works with young people in Lesotho and Botswana. Its public mission has included supporting children and young people affected by HIV and AIDS, and later broadened to encompass youth health and wellbeing, wealth inequality, and climate resilience. Why did Prince Harry resign from Sentebale?
Harry and Seeiso announced on 26 March 2025 that they were stepping down as patrons “until further notice.” In a joint statement, they said they were acting in solidarity with trustees who had also left, and described the relationship between the trustees and board chair Sophie Chandauka as broken beyond repair. They called the situation “untenable.” This was their stated explanation for leaving; it was not a finding by a regulator or court. The joint statement, reported by Sky News
The departure was from their patron roles. The available statement does not say that Sentebale had closed or that Harry had ended all support for young people in the region.

Chandauka’s allegations
Chandauka, appointed chair in 2023, raised allegations involving governance and executive management, as well as abuse of power, bullying, harassment, misogyny, and misogynoir. These were her allegations, not established findings about any individual. Contemporary reporting on the dispute
Harry and the departing trustees’ position
Harry and the trustees said their relationship with Chandauka had broken down and that trustees had sought her resignation. Contemporary reporting said the precise reasons behind that request were unclear. The parties’ accounts therefore should not be treated as interchangeable—or as facts settled by the announcement itself. Contemporary reporting on the dispute

What the Charity Commission did—and did not—find
In August 2025, The Guardian reported that the Charity Commission criticized the public handling of the conflict. It found no evidence of systemic bullying or harassment, including misogyny or misogynoir, while acknowledging that some people involved felt ill-treated. The Commission did not investigate individual bullying allegations or make findings about individuals, including Harry. Its findings neither establish that a particular person bullied someone nor amount to an individual exoneration. The Guardian’s report on the Commission’s findings
In April 2026, the Commission’s chief executive, David Holdsworth, was quoted by Channel NewsAsia as saying the public dispute had harmed the charity’s reputation, risked overshadowing its achievements, and jeopardized its ability to serve beneficiaries. That criticism concerns the dispute’s public impact; it is not a ruling on the parties’ individual allegations. Channel NewsAsia report

What happened after Harry stepped down?
In August 2025, a spokesperson for Harry said he remained committed to supporting young people in Lesotho and Botswana, but that no decision had been made about how. The possibilities mentioned were starting a new charity or supporting existing charities. The statement reported consideration of those options, not the founding of a new organization. In April 2026, Channel NewsAsia and the Associated Press reported that Sentebale had filed a defamation claim in London’s High Court against Harry and former trustee Mark Dyer. Sentebale alleged that a coordinated adverse media campaign had damaged its operations and reputation. A spokesperson for Harry and Dyer rejected the claims. The reports said court documents were not available when the claim was reported, so they do not establish the detailed basis of the claim or any judgment. The case should be described as a reported legal claim with opposing allegations, not a resolved dispute. Channel NewsAsia and Associated Press report
