Prince Harry and Meghan Markle made their first public appearance with their newborn son at Windsor Castle on 8 May 2019, two days after his birth. Later that day, they announced his name: Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor.
Archie’s birth and first public appearance
Archie was born at 05:26 on Monday 6 May 2019 and weighed 7lb 3oz, according to the Royal Family’s official account. That account recorded him as seventh in line to the throne at the time.
On Wednesday 8 May, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex appeared with their two-day-old son in St George’s Hall at Windsor Castle. The Guardian described it as the couple’s first public photocall with the baby; its contemporaneous report and ITV News’ coverage place the appearance at the castle.
What Harry and Meghan said
Speaking at the photocall, Meghan said, “It’s magic, it’s pretty amazing. I have the two best guys in the world so I’m really happy.” She described her son this way: “He has the sweetest temperament, he’s really calm.” Harry said, “Parenting is amazing.” These quotations are reported in The Guardian’s account of the appearance.

His name and the meeting with the Queen
After the photocall, the couple announced that their son was named Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor. The Guardian reproduced their announcement: “The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are pleased to announce they have named their first born child Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor.” ABC News’ contemporaneous report also covered the name announcement and appearance.
The public photocall and the family introduction were related but distinct moments. At Windsor Castle on 8 May, Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip met their eighth great-grandchild, with Meghan’s mother, Doria Ragland, present. The Royal Family’s official account records the introduction that day. The family photograph of that meeting was not the St George’s Hall photocall.
