NBC announced in May 2024 that Late Night with Seth Meyers would continue with Meyers through 2028. On Aug. 27, 2025, President Donald Trump called the renewal a “sick rumor” in a Truth Social post, even though the deal had been publicly announced more than a year earlier.

Did NBC just renew Seth Meyers’ contract?

No. The renewal at issue was announced in May 2024, when NBC said Meyers would continue hosting Late Night through 2028. TheWrap described the hosting deal as running through 2028, conditioned on the show remaining on air. The announcement was not a new renewal in August 2025. (Los Angeles Times; TheWrap)

NBCUniversal late-night programming executive Katie Hockmeyer said in the announcement: “We’re so happy to continue this legacy franchise with Seth at the helm and watch him continue to elevate the success of ‘Late Night.’” (Los Angeles Times)

What did Trump say about the renewal?

In a Truth Social post on Aug. 27, 2025, Trump called the news a “sick rumor” and described NBC as “Fake News NBC.” He asked why the network would extend Meyers’ contract and wrote, “I don’t know, but I’ll definitely be finding out!!!” LateNighter reproduced the post. (LateNighter)

Trump also attacked Meyers’ talent, intelligence and personality. Those were insults in the post, not established findings about Meyers or the show. The post documents what Trump said; it does not show that he launched an investigation or took any action to change the deal.

Was there another contract extension?

The cited coverage does not establish a second extension after NBC’s May 2024 announcement. At the time of its August 2025 report, LateNighter said there was no indication NBC had extended the deal again and noted that three years remained on the then-current contract. TheWrap’s account tied the deal through 2028 to the show remaining on air. (LateNighter; TheWrap)

A contract term is not a guarantee that a program will remain on the schedule regardless of future programming decisions. The available reporting establishes the announced term, not an unconditional promise that Late Night must air through 2028.

What does “spirals” mean in the headline?

“Spirals” is a characterization of the angry tone of Trump’s post, not a clinical assessment. The reporting establishes the post’s date and language, but does not establish Trump’s private state of mind or explain why he posted about the renewal when he did.

How does the post fit Trump’s later criticism of late-night television?

In May 2026, Reuters reported that Trump urged Comcast’s NBC to fire Meyers, amid broader comments about late-night hosts following CBS’s decision to end The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. That later criticism is separate from the August 2025 post and does not establish a change to Meyers’ contract. (Reuters)

The Washington Post also reported in May 2026 that its analysis of more than 400 hours of YouTube clips from six late-night comedy shows, covering the period since the 2024 election, found Trump was the most frequently mentioned individual and that the share of material targeting him rose over the period analyzed. Those findings describe the Post’s analysis of late-night content; they do not explain Trump’s 2025 reaction to the renewal. (The Washington Post)
