Sony’s 2026 materials show the company already using AI-assisted tools to speed up selected studio tasks, while saying one facial-animation workflow processes performers’ captured data rather than replacing them.
What did the PlayStation CEO say about AI in game development?
In a BBC interview reported by Push Square on December 3, 2024, PlayStation co-CEO Hermen Hulst described two kinds of experiences he expects players to value: “one for AI-driven innovative experiences and another for handcrafted, thoughtful content.” He added that “striking the right balance between leveraging AI and preserving the human touch will be crucial.”
That is a statement about balancing approaches, not a declaration that AI will never be used or that no jobs will be affected. Hulst’s framing also leaves room for AI to be part of a game’s experience as well as a tool used behind the scenes. The original BBC page was not directly verified; the interview remarks here are attributed as reported by Push Square.
How is PlayStation using AI to make games?
Sony’s May 2026 corporate strategy presentation describes AI as a way to automate repetitive work and improve software engineering productivity, quality assurance, 3D modeling, and animation. Its examples focus largely on helping teams process or create assets faster, rather than on AI writing entire games.

Mockingbird facial animation
Sony says its internal Mockingbird tool uses performance-capture data to animate 3D facial models. The company says it is optimizing the processing of live captures, “not replacing human performers.” Sony names Naughty Dog and San Diego Studio as adopters and identifies released title Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered as an example of its use.
Sony says animation work that would have taken hours can be completed “in a fraction of a second.” That is Sony’s description, not an independently published benchmark. The stated speed concerns processing work in this workflow; it does not mean a complete character performance or finished game is created instantly.

Hair modeling and other production tasks
Sony also describes a hair-modeling workflow in which teams use videos of real hairstyles to generate 3D models containing hundreds of strands. The company says the aim is to reduce time spent on manual tasks so developers can spend more time on worlds and gameplay.
The presentation also identifies repetitive-task automation, software engineering, and quality assurance as areas where AI can help. Sony does not say that every PlayStation game uses these tools, nor does its description establish that every example is generative AI. “AI” here covers a range of tools and workflows, not one single technology.

Does Sony use generative AI in PlayStation games?
Sony’s 2026 Game & Network Services Q&A describes several uses and exploratory areas beyond making game assets. These include AI-assisted transaction reliability and fraud prevention, synthetic voices as early placeholders, removing repetitive tasks to support faster iteration, and AI-enhanced in-game characters and worlds.
Those examples span platform operations, development workflows, and possible player-facing features. A synthetic placeholder voice, for example, is not necessarily the final voice performance in a released game. Sony’s comments do not establish that generative AI is used in every PlayStation title, or specify the scope of its use in individual games beyond the named Mockingbird examples.

AI-driven games and handcrafted games: what is the difference?
Hulst’s two categories describe different creative aims, not mutually exclusive production pipelines. A handcrafted game can use AI to speed up a technical task; an AI-driven experience could make AI behavior part of what the player encounters.

The categories can overlap: a game can be carefully authored by people while its studio uses automation on selected production tasks. Whether AI makes a game feel less or more human depends on how the tool is used and on the resulting experience, not simply on the presence of AI somewhere in development.

Does this mean game developers’ jobs are safe?
No conclusion about future staffing can be drawn from these statements. Sony says its cited capture-processing workflow does not replace the performers whose data it processes, and describes AI as a way to augment or accelerate selected work. It has not provided a guarantee that no roles will change or be eliminated as its tools and practices evolve.
The distinction matters: automating a task can change how a job is done without establishing what happens to employment overall. Sony’s public examples explain intended uses and selected tools; they are not an independent workforce study, a quantified job forecast, or an industry-wide finding.
