Robert Louis Stevenson’s “Viceroy of the Indies” never sailed; in 1721, pirates captured a Portuguese ship carrying the Viceroy of Goa. The archive offers a compelling story—but not proof of a buried hoard or supernatural hauntings.
What connects Goa to Treasure Island?
In a 2017 Scroll feature, Luis Dias traces the novel’s Goa reference to the capture of the Nossa Senhora do Cabo e São Pedro de Alcântara. Stevenson’s Viceroy of the Indies is fictional; the Portuguese vessel and its Viceroy passenger belong to the historical record. That contrast is the story’s strongest opening: fiction borrowed the shape of a real event, while later retellings made the event more spectacular.
The 1721 capture is also associated with Olivier Levasseur, the French pirate better known as La Buse. Carola Dahlke’s Deutsches Museum-affiliated study considers his participation probable, but contemporary accounts more consistently identify John Taylor as the pirate leader. The surviving accounts are not uniform, so the roles should not be presented as settled beyond that distinction.
Which parts are history, and which are later legend?
| Story element | What the evidence supports |
|---|---|
| The capture | Dahlke’s comparison of eyewitness material and contemporary reports supports the 1721 capture of the Portuguese ship carrying the Viceroy of Goa. |
| La Buse’s involvement | Dahlke judges his participation probable; accounts more often name John Taylor as leader. |
| The gallows speech and cipher | The dramatic execution-scaffold scene and published cryptogram appear in Charles de la Roncière’s 1934 novel, not in the contemporary sources Dahlke examined. Her study found no standalone manuscript of the cryptogram. |
| The monumental Golden Cross | Dahlke found no contemporary source for the celebrated cross. She traces its appearance in the legend to later novels. |
| A hidden treasure’s value or discovery | No reliable total valuation is established by the sources discussed here, and they do not establish a current, institutionally confirmed discovery. |
The cipher is a particularly effective piece of adventure-story machinery: a condemned pirate supposedly reveals a treasure’s location in code. But it should be treated as a later literary legend, not authenticated evidence from Levasseur. The same distinction applies to the spectacular cargo claims. Dias recounts the popular treasure story; Dahlke’s historical study cautions that its most famous details do not hold up against the contemporary material she reviewed.

Who was aboard the captured ship?
The treasure-hunt version can make the ship seem like a floating chest of valuables. It also risks erasing the people carried aboard against their will. Drawing on accounts identified in her study, Dahlke reports that more than 200 enslaved people were aboard and that about 60 died in the brief battle. These are estimates in the study’s account of historical sources, not figures from a modern census.
Why does this feel like a film waiting to be made?
The story has the ingredients of a historical documentary: a famous novel’s invented vessel, a documented capture, disputed pirate attribution and a cipher whose dramatic origin can be traced to a twentieth-century novel. The tension is not simply whether treasure remains hidden, but how a limited historical record grew into a durable legend—and which parts of the past that legend left out.

“Ghosts” works as a metaphor for the stories that linger around the event, not as a documented supernatural element. Dahlke describes the historical context as involving colonialism and the Inquisition, alongside “a small kernel of truth” and a much larger body of seafaring yarn. A film grounded in that tension could investigate what contemporary accounts establish, show where later fiction entered the story and give the enslaved people aboard the ship a place in the narrative. The record supports that investigation; it does not establish a dependable hoard or a confirmed modern discovery.
