Phish’s four Sphere concerts in Las Vegas, April 18–21, 2024, paired a different set list and visual presentation each night with the band’s defining open-ended improvisation. The documented run is best understood not as a fixed spectacle, but as a new visual setting for music that remained free to change in the moment.
What made the Sphere run different?
Sphere Entertainment announced four shows, each with its own set list and visuals. The venue’s enormous screen offered a canvas for imagery ranging from abstract color and light to recognizable scenes. Associated Press reporting described the visual concepts as drawing on the four states of matter: solid, liquid, gas and plasma.
AP reported in 2024 that the Sphere screen measured 160,000 square feet and displayed images at 16K by 16K resolution; it also reported 167,000 speaker drivers. Those are figures reported by AP in 2024, not independently verified measurements here. The scale helps explain the production’s potential, but the central artistic question was whether the images could complement Phish’s changing music without dictating it.
Did the visuals constrain the improvisation?
According to AP, the band insisted on keeping the freedom to improvise rather than following a click track to meet visual cues. Trey Anastasio explained the priority: “I felt like if we didn’t have that element, it wouldn’t be a Phish concert.” AP reported that some visuals could respond to musical passages, a format that let the show’s imagery work with the performance while leaving the band room to move.

- High Fidelity: Hearprotek Music ear plugs do an effective job of bringing down the overall volume, blocking background noises at a comfortable level while preserving the sound clarity and sharpness and you will be able to hear different sound frequencies
- 20 db Noise Reduction: Comes with 2 sets of 20 db ear plugs in different sizes (small & standard), cutting up an impressive 20 db's of sound volume. You can always have your spare plug in case any plugs are fallen out unfortunately or missing
- Designed For Comfort: Made of high quality silicone material that provides comfort from prolonged usage. They are designed to have an ergonomic curved body that follows the shape of your ear canal, which provides a snag and comfortable fit
- Discrete & Portable: Low-profile design with translucent or frosted shells for a discreet look on stage, at concerts, clubs, or the office. Includes a soft silicone detachable cord and comes in a long-lasting aluminum case with a carabiner, making it easy to clip to belts or bags and keep your plugs secure
- Warm Tips: While these earplugs do not block all noise completely, they maintain music quality and keep the volume at a safer level. Not recommended for activities which need high noise reduction level like sleeping, hunting, or shooting
That balance is the strongest basis for judging the run: the Sphere supplied an unusually expansive visual frame, while the music retained the possibility of detours and extended interplay. The available reporting establishes the production’s intent and the set lists, but does not support ranking one night as definitively best.

The song orders show four distinct programs rather than a repeated set dressed in different visuals. Across the run, familiar Phish repertoire sits alongside newer material, with each night balancing those elements differently. April 18 moves from “Everything’s Right” and “Back on the Train” through “Maze” and “Carini,” then gives the second set a sequence anchored by “Sand,” “Tweezer” and “Fluffhead.”
April 19 sets “Free,” “Bathtub Gin” and “Split Open And Melt” against a second set that includes “Ruby Waves,” “You Enjoy Myself” and the atmospheric “What’s the Use.” On April 20, “Stash,” “Steam” and “Taste” lead into a second set featuring “Fuego,” “Golden Age” and “Chalk Dust Torture.” The final night runs from “Ghost” and “Divided Sky” to a second set including “Down With Disease,” “Light” and “Piper.” These are differences in documented programming, not evidence that one show was superior.
