In October 2024, PerthNow reported that selected concerts at Perth Concert Hall and the West Australian Symphony Orchestra (WASO) offered lower ticket prices to people below age limits ranging from 30 to 40. The deals drew social-media criticism from people who called age-based pricing unfair. The reported prices and concerts were specific to that time; they are not a current ticket list.
What the reported offers were
PerthNow’s 15 October 2024 report described three offers at Perth Concert Hall. In each example, it compared the discounted ticket with a standard ticket in the same seating section:
| Concert | Reported age-based offer | Reported standard-ticket difference |
|---|---|---|
| Brahms’ Splendour, 22 November 2024 | $30 for people under 30 | $110 for an over-30 standard ticket in the same section—an $80 difference |
| ACO Scotland Unbound, 20 November 2024 | $35 for people under 35 | The over-35 standard ticket in the same section was reported to cost $94 more |
| MVA: Musica Alchemica | $40 for people under 40 | The over-40 ticket in the same section was reported to cost $75 more |
These are figures PerthNow reported for those offers in October 2024, not independently audited ticket records or prices that can be assumed to remain available. The report said buyers booked online and had to show photo ID at the concert. PerthNow’s 15 October 2024 report is the source for the examples and the reported reaction.
Why the discounts prompted criticism
The objection, as PerthNow described it, was that people in the same seating section could pay substantially different prices because of an age cutoff. Social-media users quoted or summarized in the report called the offers “ageist” and argued that age should not determine who receives a discount.

The report establishes that criticism appeared on social media; it does not quantify how many people objected or show that their views represented the wider public. It also does not report an official response from WASO or Perth Concert Hall, so the criticism should not be treated as a documented institutional dispute with a stated resolution.
What WASO currently says about Under 30 tickets
WASO’s official information describes $30 Under 30 tickets for selected concerts. Availability depends on the event, so check the specific concert listing rather than assuming the offer applies to every performance. WASO says to book online, choose the Under 30 ticket, and bring photo ID to the concert. A one-off handling fee may apply, which can affect the total cost. See WASO’s Booking Info and Under 30s Tickets pages for its current terms.

Age-based offers and concession tickets are different
WASO sets concession eligibility separately from its age-specific offers. Its Booking Info page lists eligible concession cards and full-time students, and says proof of eligibility is required. It names the Pensioner Concession Card, Totally and Permanently Incapacitated Pensioner Card, War Widow or Veterans’ Affairs Card, and Health Care Card; the Commonwealth Seniors Health Card is excluded. WASO also states: “Seniors Card holders are not eligible for concession prices.” Companion Card holders can receive one complimentary ticket for their carer, subject to presenting the card at booking. These concession rules do not establish eligibility for an Under 30 ticket.

When judging whether two offers differ, compare like with like: the same concert, date, seating section and ticket class. Then check the age threshold, standard and concession prices, event-specific eligibility, and any handling fee. A price from one of the October 2024 examples should not be compared with a current listing as though both were available at the same time.
