The clinical evidence comes from screened participants receiving psilocybin alongside psychological support, while reports from unsupervised use are less predictable and harder to interpret.
Can psilocybin treat depression?
Clinical studies have reported antidepressant effects for some participants, but they test a treatment package—not simply a dose of mushrooms. Participants are screened and receive psychological support; in some Johns Hopkins trials, a facilitator remains present during the session. Sandeep Nayak, medical director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Psychedelic & Consciousness Research, has noted that trial participants may have “25 hours of contact with a psychotherapist,” making the experience unlike taking a drug without that support (Johns Hopkins Medicine, 2024).
What a small 12-month study found
In a Johns Hopkins study published in 2022, 24 people completed two psilocybin sessions with supportive psychotherapy and follow-up. At 12 months, 75% met the study’s definition of treatment response and 58% met its definition of remission. These are results among the 24 completers in a small, supported study—not a forecast of how often psilocybin will work for people generally. The researchers also found that personal meaning, spiritual experience, and mystical experience predicted increased well-being, but did not predict improvement in depression (Gukasyan et al., 2022).
What a separate dose-comparison trial found
A 2022 phase 2 trial of people with treatment-resistant depression compared single doses of synthetic psilocybin. The 25 mg group had a greater reduction in depression symptom scores at week three than the 1 mg control group; the 10 mg group did not differ significantly from the control. This result concerns a particular dose comparison and short-term outcome, not a guarantee of lasting benefit or a direct comparison with every established depression treatment (Carhart-Harris et al., New England Journal of Medicine, 2022).

What does “meeting God” mean in these reports?
People may describe a session as mystical, spiritual, or involving a presence or deity. Those are reports of subjective experience. They do not establish that a supernatural being was objectively present, and the available evidence does not establish how often people taking psilocybin specifically for depression literally report meeting God.
A 2024 analysis of a phase 2 comparison found that mystical-experience and ego-dissolution scores statistically mediated the treatment condition’s effect on depressive response. Higher mystical-experience scores were associated with greater antidepressant response. The authors characterized the evidence for a causal mechanism as qualified: a statistical association does not show that a mystical experience caused improvement, nor that such an experience is necessary for it (Weiss et al., 2024).

The longer follow-up provides a useful distinction: spiritual and mystical experiences predicted increased well-being, but not improvement in depression. Well-being and depressive symptoms are related, yet they are not interchangeable outcomes.
Do psychedelics make people believe in God?
Not reliably, based on the Hopkins account of naturalistic psilocybin use. Participants’ metaphysical beliefs and their identification as atheist or religious were almost or entirely unchanged. A related analysis reported increased attribution of consciousness to nonhuman entities, but that is a separate measure and should not be treated as evidence of conversion to belief in God (Johns Hopkins Medicine, 2024).

That survey followed people using psilocybin outside a clinical trial. About 650 of 2,800 initial respondents completed all six follow-up surveys. Most of those respondents were U.S.-based, college-educated white men with previous psychedelic experience. Participants reported improvements on average, but a minority described continuing mood fluctuations and depressive symptoms. Because the study was observational and the follow-up group was selective, its results cannot show that psilocybin caused the reported changes or represent all users (Johns Hopkins Medicine, 2024; survey published in 2023).
Is psilocybin therapy the same as taking mushrooms on your own?
No. Clinical findings come from selected participants in structured settings with screening, preparation, support, and follow-up. They should not be transferred directly to unsupervised mushroom use. Albert Garcia-Romeu, associate director of the Johns Hopkins center, has warned: “If people are taking this at home, at a festival or in some other setting, it’s really difficult to predict what would happen in terms of mental health” (Johns Hopkins Medicine, 2024).

Safety estimates also depend on who was studied and under what conditions. A Johns Hopkins discussion of adverse-event research in 2025 said that approximately 4% of participants in studies involving people with psychiatric conditions—including depression, anxiety, or substance-use disorders—experienced serious adverse events. In many cases, it was difficult to determine whether the event was caused by the drug. The studies used controlled settings and screened participants, excluding people considered at increased cardiovascular or psychiatric risk, particularly those at risk of psychosis. No serious adverse events were reported among healthy participants without known psychiatric conditions in the meta-analysis discussed. These findings are not estimates of risk from recreational use.

In July 2026, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued final guidance that “provides general considerations for sponsors developing psychedelic drugs for the treatment of medical conditions.” It is guidance for clinical investigations and drug development, not an approval for general consumer access to psilocybin treatment for depression. The guidance alone does not establish that psilocybin is an approved, routinely available depression treatment.

The evidence supports continued study of psilocybin-assisted treatment, including the role of psychological support and participants’ acute experiences. It does not support treating a spiritual account as proof of a cure, a conversion, or a universal outcome.
