Pat Monahan and his wife, Amber, named their son Rock Richard after Monahan’s sister-in-law, Summer, said she had repeatedly dreamed that the unborn baby was telling her his name was Rock. Monahan said the choice was not a reference to his career in rock music; the couple wanted a name they felt gave their son a strong foundation.
How Pat and Amber arrived at the name Rock
In a People interview published April 17, 2012, Train frontman Pat Monahan recounted that Summer had vivid dreams in which the unborn child visited her and insisted on being called Rock. “My sister-in-law was having these very intuitive, very intense dreams that [my unborn son] was visiting her and insisting that his name is Rock,” he said.
Monahan described one dream in which Summer heard the baby say his parents were not listening and ask her to tell them his name. In another, she reportedly saw him in a Colorado Rockies uniform with “Rock” on the shirt. After several such dreams, Monahan said, the family began taking them seriously. He joked that they accepted the name so Summer could get some sleep.
That is the family’s account as Monahan told it; the dreams are an anecdote from his interview, not independently verifiable events.

Why they chose Rock Richard
Monahan directly rejected the obvious music-related interpretation: “We didn’t name him because of rock music.” Instead, he said, “We felt like he should have a strong foundation name.” His explanation presents Rock as a deliberate choice for its perceived strength, rather than a nod to his profession.

People’s story described Rock as a newborn and mentioned his older sister, Autumn, who was 3½ at the time. It also portrayed the family as adjusting to the new baby. Those details describe the moment the story was published, not the family’s present circumstances.
