Maria Marruá appears in jaguar form to protect her daughter, and the Velho do Rio intervenes, persuading José Lucas to leave. This is a fictional storyline, not a real incident.
What happens in Pantanal chapter 90?
José Lucas asks Juma for a kiss. When she refuses, he tries to take her by force. The episode summary describes Maria Marruá—Juma’s deceased mother—appearing as a jaguar to protect her. The Velho do Rio then convinces José Lucas to leave the tapera. The available summaries do not establish a more detailed sequence of movements or any injury.
The scene is about coercion, not romantic persistence: Juma does not consent, and José Lucas attempts to override her refusal.
When did the scene air?
The dates reported at the time differ because they refer to different things. A June 29, 2022 preview by Quem / Globo scheduled the sequence for July 8. TheTVDB’s chapter 90 entry records the episode’s original air date as July 9, 2022. The first is a preview date for the scene; the second is a database’s recorded date for the chapter.

How does Maria Marruá and the Velho do Rio protect Juma?
Maria’s return in jaguar form gives the scene its supernatural dimension: she appears to defend her daughter. The Velho do Rio is the person who directly intervenes in the confrontation and persuades José Lucas to go. A contemporaneous NaTelinha preview also described him stopping the assault and comforting Juma.
Was a similar scene in the 1990 Pantanal?
NaTelinha’s retrospective preview says the 1990 original also portrayed José Lucas trying to abuse Juma, with the Velho do Rio intervening. That supports a comparison at the level of the plot beat, but does not establish every scene-level difference between the original and the 2022 remake. NaTelinha reproduces two lines as dialogue from the 1990 version: the Velho do Rio says, “Não vê que ela não lhe quer? Vá embora! Monta no seu cavalo e vá embora!”, and Juma says, “Você não me rela, senão eu lhe mordo!” These are reported fictional lines, not statements by real people.
