In Jurassic World Rebirth (2025), a Tyrannosaurus swims after its prey, a Quetzalcoatlus guards a nest, and a DNA heist drives the plot. Fossils make some of those scenes plausible, contradict others, and leave important details uncertain. The films borrow from paleontology, but they are science fiction—not documentaries.
How to judge a dinosaur scene
A scene can be plausible without being proven, and a creature can look convincing while its anatomy or behavior is wrong. The key questions are what evidence exists, how complete it is, and whether a film shows a known animal or invents one.
Paleontologist Jack Horner, who advised on the first four films released in the franchise, described that balance in a 2014 interview: “There were a lot of things wrong, but it was a fictional movie. It’s not a documentary.” He said he aimed to help filmmakers portray appearance and movement in ways consistent with available evidence, while acknowledging that filmmakers sometimes chose what best served the story. Smithsonian Magazine, December 2, 2014.
Could a T. rex swim?
Swimming is one of Rebirth’s more plausible dramatic choices. University of Maryland paleontologist Thomas Holtz said, “A lot of dinosaurs were probably moderately competent swimmers.” In his view, a T. rex could use its tail and legs to move through water; its small forearms are not the obvious source of propulsion. That assessment is qualified: it does not mean every dinosaur was an equally capable swimmer, or that the scene documents exactly how a T. rex behaved. University of Maryland, June 30, 2025.

What the fossils say about nests, horns, and tails
Quetzalcoatlus eggs
The film’s Quetzalcoatlus nest, built from sticks, differs from the evidence Holtz cited. “But so far, all Quetzalcoatlus eggs that have been found were buried in sand,” he said. “Found so far” matters: the eggs discovered to date indicate buried eggs, but they do not prove that every individual or nesting situation was identical. University of Maryland, June 30, 2025.
Aquilops and its nose horn
Aquilops was a tiny herbivore, small enough to fit in a backpack, according to Holtz. The trailer gives it a nose horn, but the single known specimen offers no evidence for that feature. “We only have one specimen of it, but there’s no evidence for that horn on its nose,” Holtz said. The limited sample means the careful conclusion is that the horn is unsupported by known evidence—not that fossils prove no Aquilops ever had one. University of Maryland, June 30, 2025.

Titanosaur tails
Rebirth gives its titanosaurs long, whip-like tails, but Holtz says that is the wrong sauropod branch for that body plan. Some titanosaur relatives had shorter tails; long, whip-like tails are associated with a different sauropod branch that includes Brontosaurus. The comparison should not be mistaken for a complete description of every sauropod: Holtz also notes that Titanosaurus itself is known from only a few bones, limiting what can be said about that genus specifically. University of Maryland, June 30, 2025.
Is Mosasaurus a dinosaur?
No. Mosasaurus was an aquatic lizard, not a dinosaur. Holtz says the films exaggerate its size, but get one detail right: it has two rows of teeth. The distinction matters because a prehistoric marine reptile may share a movie with dinosaurs without belonging to the dinosaur group. University of Maryland, June 30, 2025.

Can scientists clone dinosaurs from DNA in amber?
The amber-mosquito idea is a plot device, not an established route to resurrecting non-avian dinosaurs. Horner said attempts to recover dinosaur DNA from dinosaur remains, mosquitoes, and amber had not succeeded, and explained that DNA breaks down over time. His 2014 comments concern those recovery attempts; they do not establish that viable dinosaur DNA is available for cloning. Smithsonian Magazine, December 2, 2014.
In discussing Rebirth’s genetic-material heist, Holtz joked that “DNA is just a bunch of data in a sequence” and that copying it should require a hacker and a thumb drive rather than a commando team. The quip critiques the movie’s access plot; it is not evidence that scientists can clone a dinosaur from ancient DNA. University of Maryland, June 30, 2025.

How should we judge the film’s hybrids?
A fossil-informed animal and an invented hybrid do not face the same test. Holtz describes a mutadon as a combination of raptor and pterosaur—groups that are very distantly related. It is an intentional fantasy creature, not a reconstruction of a known fossil species, so asking whether it accurately represents a particular fossil animal misses the point. Its design can still be discussed as fiction, but the known fossil record cannot validate the hybrid as a real species.
What earlier Jurassic films tell us
Expert comments about earlier films should be kept tied to those films. In a 2022 discussion of Jurassic World Dominion, paleontologists Steve Brusatte and Kenneth Lacovara addressed subjects including snowy habitats, parental care, Mosasaurus scale, and Dreadnoughtus. Those comments provide film-specific context; they are not a review of Rebirth or a single verdict on the franchise. Live Science, 2022.

Why the science-fiction distinction matters
Some movie details are grounded in fossils, some are reasonable interpretations of incomplete evidence, and others serve suspense or spectacle. That mix is a useful invitation to ask what scientists actually know—and what remains unknown. The best way to watch is with both ideas in mind: enjoy the story, and treat its prehistoric world as an imaginative prompt rather than a field guide.
