Patari set out to make Pakistani music easier to discover in one place. The startup paired a catalogue focused on local artists and regional music with playlists, recommendations, and search designed for the varied Romanized spellings listeners use for Urdu. That made it a promising answer to a specific problem—not proof that it solved every listener’s or artist’s needs. Its history also shows how licensing and royalty administration complicated the effort.
What Patari set out to solve
When Patari emerged in 2015, its pitch was to bring Pakistani songs and artists together in a service built around local discovery. The founders emphasized older and less mainstream music they believed was difficult to find, rather than claiming that every recording was available. In a later interview, they also described ambitions to include cultural material and regional music. Those were the company’s goals, not independently measured evidence of catalogue completeness.
The premise mattered because finding a song can be harder when listeners and databases use different spellings. A listener might type an Urdu song title in Roman script using one of several transliterations. Patari’s founders said its search was designed to account for that variation; a contemporaneous Dawn account of the service described the locally adapted interface and search approach. The “best in the business” characterization was the founders’ claim, not an independent technical assessment.
From television streaming to music
The founders told The Friday Times they had first explored building a streaming portal for Pakistani television channels. Faisal Sherjan encouraged them to focus on music instead. Dawn later reported that Patari began beta testing in April 2015 and went live in September, with a website and mobile apps.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That pivot shaped the service’s identity: instead of being a general entertainment portal, Patari aimed to make Pakistani music easier to browse and hear digitally. Early descriptions highlighted playlists, recommendations, and ways to explore by genre and mood, alongside search.
What the service offered—and what it did not establish
Patari’s original proposition was about convenience and discovery: one place to look for Pakistani music, including artists or recordings that founders felt were underserved elsewhere. A claim of broad local focus should not be mistaken for proof that every track was present or cleared for streaming. Availability depended in part on rights holders and specific recordings.

The distinction remains important when looking at the Patari-branded app now listed on Google Play. Its description promotes browsing by artist, album, genre, and playlist, and names Coke Studio performances, drama and film soundtracks, qawwali, folk, and regional music. It lists Urdu, Punjabi, Sindhi, Pashto, Balochi, and Saraiki among the languages. The listing says an integrated YouTube player can play official music videos and audio when available; that is the listing’s description, not independent confirmation of catalogue completeness or universal track availability.
The Google Play listing shows a July 10, 2026 update date. It displays Verge Systems as the developer label and VERGE INC. in the developer details. A listing establishes that a Patari-branded app is available to view on that store; it does not establish that it is the same business as the original startup, that it retains the original catalogue, or who controls rights to the recordings it offers. Dawn also reported Patari’s exclusive digital releases and Patari Aslis, an EP of original tracks by independent artists funded by the company. These projects reflected an effort to do more than aggregate music: Patari wanted to create a digital outlet for local artists as well.

Why rights and royalties were difficult
The promise of a large local catalogue depended on the company being able to establish who had the right to distribute each recording. In 2015, The Friday Times described a dispute in which EMI Pakistan requested the removal of music it said it controlled. Dawn also quoted co-founder Khalid Bajwa describing the difficulty of determining whether particular recordings belonged to artists or labels, especially where labels had closed. These reports document Patari’s experience with specific rights questions; they do not establish a blanket account of Pakistani copyright law.
Artist compensation was another part of the promise, but reports show both progress and friction. Dawn reported Patari’s announcement of Rs1.25 million in royalty payouts. The National’s March 2016 account said some musicians had not yet been paid; Patari cited delays in collecting tax and financial details. The announcement and the reported delays belong together: an effort to pay artists had begun, but it was not a simple or complete process.

In Dawn’s December 31, 2016 report, Patari director of content Ahmer Naqvi said: “Before Patari, the two truisms of the local music industry were that no one adheres to copyrights, and no one pays royalties.” That is Naqvi’s characterization of the industry, not a statistical finding about every label, artist, or music service.
What “the answer” really meant
Patari’s strongest answer was to a discovery problem: it tried to make Pakistani music, including regional and less-mainstream work, easier to find through a locally oriented interface. It also tried to create a legal, monetizable digital channel that could bring visibility and payment to artists. The history is more complicated than the slogan, because catalogue access depended on contested or unclear rights, and royalty payments faced administrative delays.
Today’s app listing points to a Patari-branded listening option, but the available evidence does not establish continuity with the original startup or its rights catalogue. The useful takeaway is therefore both historical and practical: Patari articulated a distinctive need for Pakistani music discovery, while the breadth and ownership of any current catalogue must be judged recording by recording and against the current service’s own information.
