Paddington in Peru is a warm, polished family adventure, even if its jungle treasure hunt lacks some of the comic invention and emotional distinction of the first two films. This third Paddington feature takes the bear and the Brown family from London to Peru in search of Aunt Lucy, trading the series’ familiar city setting for a bigger, more conventional adventure.
Is Paddington in Peru any good?
Yes, if you want a gentle, good-natured family film with an appealing central character and an adventurous change of scenery. The film keeps Paddington’s kindness and reassuring spirit intact, and its visual polish gives the story an inviting scale. Its main weakness is that the quest often feels more familiar than the best parts of the earlier films: the comedy and emotional beats do not always have the same distinctive spark.
That makes this a positive but measured recommendation. It is an enjoyable continuation, rather than a film that clearly surpasses Paddington or Paddington 2.
What is the story?
When Aunt Lucy goes missing from the Home for Retired Bears, Paddington and the Brown family travel to Peru to find her. A map clue leads them into the Amazon rainforest, where their search becomes a quest that may also reveal legendary treasure. Sony’s official synopsis presents the journey as a family mystery and adventure, moving the series well beyond its familiar London surroundings.

How does it compare with the first two films?
Warmth remains; the comedy is less distinctive
The film’s basic appeal is still Paddington himself: considerate, earnest and capable of turning good intentions into comic complications. But the change in director matters to the film’s comic texture. Dougal Wilson directs, while Paul King, director of the first two films, shares a story credit. The Associated Press review describes the film as bright and buoyant but finds that Wilson does not fully recreate King’s comic spirit.
A bigger setting, a more familiar adventure
Peru gives the story a fresh visual palette and lets the Browns take part in a more expansive journey. Yet bigger scenery does not automatically mean a more original story. The BFI review sees the Amazon quest as increasingly generic, with less of the wit that made the earlier films’ visual comedy memorable. That is a critical judgment, not a measure of universal audience response, but it captures the trade-off: the film broadens the adventure while losing some of the series’ unusual comic perspective.

The themes are present, with less emotional weight
Paddington’s movement between two homes still gestures toward the immigrant experience and the challenge of reconciling separate identities and attachments. The BFI finds that this thread has less emotional heft here than in the earlier films. It remains part of the character’s appeal, but the treasure-hunt plot gives it less room to develop.

Dougal Wilson directed Paddington in Peru. Ben Whishaw returns as Paddington’s voice, alongside Hugh Bonneville, Emily Mortimer, Julie Walters, Jim Broadbent, Imelda Staunton, Olivia Colman and Antonio Banderas. Is it suitable for young children?
The UK home-entertainment version is classified by the British Board of Film Classification as “mild threat.” Its guidance notes slapstick violence, peril, occasional very mild language, rude humor and family worry about a missing relative, with humor and reassurance throughout. The BBFC says brief moments may unsettle very young children. In the United States, the Associated Press review reports a PG rating for action, mild rude humor and thematic elements; classifications differ by jurisdiction.
The BBFC lists an approximate runtime of 106 minutes. The Associated Press also reports a 106-minute runtime.

Where was it filmed?
Although the story is set in Peru, filming locations are production context, not evidence that the film is a documentary portrayal of the country. PROMPERÚ’s Film in Peru page lists locations in Lima and Cusco, including Lima’s Historic Center and Miraflores boardwalk, as well as Machupicchu National Archaeological Park, Machu Picchu town and Huayna Picchu.
