Horan said he felt fortunate to have seen Payne recently, but did not know their goodbye and hug would be the last. He wrote: “I sadly didn’t know that after saying goodbye and hugging him that evening, I would be saying goodbye forever. It’s heartbreaking.” ITV News reproduced the tribute.
When did Horan last see Payne?
Payne had attended one of Horan’s concerts in Argentina shortly before his death. Horan referred to their recent meeting in his tribute; ITV reported that the two had seen each other there. Payne died in Buenos Aires on October 16, 2024, aged 31. The Independent reported on their last meeting.

Horan’s message to Payne’s family
Horan also sent condolences to Payne’s relatives and son Bear, writing: “My love and condolences go out to Geoff, Karen, Ruth, Nicola and of course his son Bear. Thank you for everything, Payno. Love you brother.” The words appear in Horan’s personal tribute as reproduced by ITV News. Read the full report.

Horan’s Instagram message was his individual tribute. The four surviving members of One Direction—Horan, Louis Tomlinson, Harry Styles and Zayn Malik—also issued a separate joint statement. They said they were devastated and would take time to grieve and process the loss of their “brother.” The group statement should not be confused with Horan’s personal words. The Associated Press reported the joint statement.
