Mama June Shannon said her daughter Anna wanted to spend more time with family and be together. Shannon recalled that the family came together to make that happen, as reported by WSB-TV from a People interview.
What did Anna keep repeating?
In WSB-TV’s March 8, 2024 report of her People interview, Shannon recalled Anna saying: “I want to spend more time with family. I want to spend more time together.” Shannon added: “We came together and made that happen.”
This is Shannon’s recollection as reported by WSB-TV, not an independently verified transcript of Anna’s words.
The family’s final trip together
Shannon placed the memory around a family trip to Gatlinburg, Tennessee, during the last week of November 2023. She said the family noticed something was wrong in the last couple of days of the trip, but that they “adored” their time together.

After they returned home, Shannon said nurses told the family Anna was starting to “transition.” Shannon recalled first thinking Anna was worn out from the trip, then realizing that was not the explanation. That is Shannon’s account of what she understood from the nurses, not a medical explanation.
How the family responded
Shannon said her husband, Justin Stroud, supported the family, including helping take Anna to treatments and helping with school transportation for the children. In the same account, she described the family making time together in response to Anna’s repeated wish.

WSB-TV and Yahoo’s republication of the People exclusive report that Anna “Chickadee” Cardwell had been battling stage 4 cancer and died in December 2023. The reports cited here do not establish additional medical details.
