Recommended Free Tools
You can find books to read on Kindle through Amazon Prime benefits, eligible library loans from Libby, and free ebooks from Project Gutenberg. The key difference is whether a book is included with a membership, borrowed for a limited time, or offered as a downloadable public-domain ebook. You do not need a Kindle e-reader: compatible Kindle apps and browser reading are options too.
Choose the free-book route that fits
| Route | What you need | How access works | Catalog stability |
|---|---|---|---|
| First Reads and Original Stories | Amazon Prime membership | First Reads offers a monthly selection; titles added to your Kindle library do not expire. Original Stories offers short fiction and nonfiction. | First Reads selections change monthly. |
| Prime Reading | Amazon Prime membership | Borrow eligible titles from a rotating catalog. | Rotating selection; an individual title is not guaranteed to remain available. |
| Libby library loans | Library card and access to a participating library’s Libby collection | Borrow a title when available; loans are temporary. Most Libby books can be sent to Kindle e-readers in the United States. | Depends on the library’s licenses, the title, and current availability. |
| Project Gutenberg | No Prime or paid ebook subscription required | Read in a browser or download a compatible ebook file. | Its catalog focuses on older works and public-domain ebooks. |
| Kindle Unlimited | Paid subscription; an eligible trial may be available | Borrow titles from its subscription catalog. | Catalog titles can change. A trial converts to a paid monthly plan unless canceled under the offer’s terms. |
Prime-included titles are not cost-free for someone who subscribes to Prime only to read them. Library books are loans, not permanent additions, and Project Gutenberg is a separate source of free ebooks.
Find books included with Amazon Prime
Amazon First Reads and Original Stories
Browse the current First Reads selection while signed in to the Amazon account with Prime. Amazon says members can choose one free Kindle book each month, with a bonus short read in select months. Once added to the Kindle library, a First Reads title does not expire. Amazon Original Stories is another Prime-included option, featuring short fiction and nonfiction. Neither benefit requires a separate Kindle Unlimited subscription. See Amazon’s First Reads and Original Stories information for current details.
Prime Reading
In the Amazon marketplace tied to your account, open Prime Reading, select an eligible title, and add it to your library. The selection rotates, so check the live catalog rather than assuming a particular book will stay included. Amazon UK’s help page says Prime members there can borrow up to 10 eligible titles at a time; terms and catalog availability may differ in other marketplaces. Consult your local Amazon marketplace for its current rules. Amazon UK’s Prime Reading help page describes its local terms.

Borrow library books through Libby
Libby is a way to borrow ebooks from a participating library, not a universal catalog of titles. You need a library card accepted by that library, and the library’s licenses determine which books it offers and whether a copy is currently available. A waitlist may apply.
- Open Libby and search your library’s collection for a book.
- Borrow it if a copy is available, or place a hold if the library offers that option.
- On a compatible Kindle e-reader in the United States, open Shelf → Loans → Read With → Kindle.
- Sign in to Amazon if prompted, then select Get Library Book.
Libby states: “You can read most Libby books on a Kindle ereader (available in the U.S. only).” The Kindle option is limited to the United States; Libby directs Fire tablet users to read with the Libby app instead. Loan periods and return rules are set through the library. See Libby’s Kindle instructions, updated September 3, 2026.

Get free ebooks from Project Gutenberg
Project Gutenberg offers more than 75,000 free ebooks, with a catalog centered on older works and public-domain titles. Search its catalog, then either read a book in your browser or download a format that works with your device. Its figure is stated on the site’s Reading Options page, accessed October 8, 2026; it is not a dated study statistic.
- Find a title in the Project Gutenberg catalog.
- Choose browser reading or download a compatible file. For newer Kindles, Gutenberg recommends EPUB3 and Amazon’s Send-to-Kindle service.
- Send the file through the available Send-to-Kindle method. If using email delivery, the sender address must be approved in Amazon’s settings.
- For a Kindle released before 2013, Gutenberg advises using USB transfer with Kindle/MOBI format rather than EPUB.
These file-transfer directions are Gutenberg’s guidance; check Amazon’s current Send-to-Kindle options for your account and device. See Project Gutenberg’s reading options.

Do not confuse Kindle Unlimited with a free source
Kindle Unlimited is a separate paid Amazon subscription, not a Prime benefit and not a free-book catalog. Amazon says any free trial depends on eligibility, requires a valid payment method, and automatically becomes a paid monthly plan after the trial unless canceled. Titles in the service can change. Review the live offer and cancellation terms before starting a trial. Details are on Amazon’s Kindle Unlimited page and Amazon’s Kindle Unlimited help page.

A Kindle e-reader is optional. Amazon says supported Kindle content can be read with its free Kindle app on compatible phones, tablets, and computers, while Project Gutenberg also supports browser reading. For library titles, the available reading method depends on your library, the title, and your device; in the United States, Libby’s Kindle delivery applies to most books on Kindle e-readers, while Fire tablet users should use Libby’s app. Amazon’s device FAQ is included in its First Reads information, and Gutenberg’s browser and download methods are described in its reading options.
