Spoilers for all of Season 1. Margo Banks killed Abby Jackson. Abby had discovered that Margo was having an affair with her boyfriend, Brad, and had an abortion. When Abby confronted her, Margo took Sophie’s gun and shot her. The finale’s key clue is a mismatch between Margo’s earlier claim that she could not use tampons and the tampons Sophie later finds in her bathroom.
How Sophie figures out who killed Abby
Abby’s murder initially points toward Sophie: the gun used to kill Abby belongs to her, even though Sophie has no apparent connection to the teenager. The series also offers other suspicious possibilities. Youth Pastor Pete had preyed on girls and gave Abby a ride; Jill disliked Abby, erased GPS data and passwords, and cleaned her car. Those details create suspicion, but neither Pete nor Jill killed Abby.
The solution comes from a small callback to the first episode. Margo tells Sophie she cannot use tampons. Later, Sophie sees tampons in Margo’s bathroom. That contradiction prompts Sophie to reconsider the pregnancy story and realize the abortion was Margo’s, not Abby’s. Margo had been involved with Brad, became pregnant, and ended the pregnancy. When Abby confronted her about the affair and abortion, Margo killed her with Sophie’s gun. Margo admits both the murder and the cover-up when Sophie confronts her. Why Margo killed Abby
Margo acts to protect the life she has built: her marriage, her wealthy and politically connected position, and the possibility of her husband’s political future. Abby’s knowledge threatened to expose the affair and abortion. Margo’s motive is therefore less about a personal feud with Abby than about preserving her security and status.

Creator Rebecca Cutter told TheWrap that she deliberately changed the killer from the source novel to Margo, despite Margo seeming like an obvious suspect. Malin Åkerman, who plays Margo, told ELLE she knew from the beginning that Margo was the killer and played the character with the full arc in mind.
What happens to Sophie, Margo, and Kyle
Margo confesses the affair and abortion to her husband, Jed, who throws her out. Sophie does not turn Margo in. Instead, she confronts her and leaves her knowing that the truth is out between them. Kyle, Margo’s brother, tries to protect her and threatens Sophie. Sophie hits him with her car and later dumps his body in a reservoir.

The final call comes on Kyle’s phone from Margo. Sophie answers without speaking, leaving Margo to hear her breathing. The scene turns the women’s shared knowledge into a mutual secret: Margo knows Sophie is connected to Kyle’s death, while Sophie knows Margo killed Abby. Cutter said she wanted the two women on “more equal footing” after Kyle’s death, but the finale does not settle what their relationship will become.
Does the series ending match May Cobb’s novel?
No: the television adaptation changes who the killer is. Cutter confirmed that Margo is the killer in the series and that she changed this element from May Cobb’s source novel. The sources cited here do not establish the novel’s full ending, so a scene-by-scene comparison would go beyond what is confirmed. What comes next after the Season 1 cliffhanger?
The finale leaves Sophie and Margo’s alliance—and the danger between them—unresolved. Netflix Tudum reported on October 7, 2026, that the series had been renewed for Season 3 and that Season 2 was scheduled to return on November 26, 2026.
