Journalists in Gaza urged their Washington colleagues not to attend, while demonstrators outside criticized President Joe Biden’s Israel policy and Western media coverage of the war. The appeal and protest were related, but distinct actions; the available reporting does not establish how many journalists ultimately boycotted.
Why was the dinner targeted?
More than two dozen journalists in Gaza wrote a letter urging journalists in Washington to boycott the dinner. Their appeal connected the dangers facing reporters covering the war with objections to the Biden administration’s support for Israel. The letter’s authors also alleged that journalists had faced detention, interrogation and torture by the Israeli military; those are claims made in the letter, not findings established by the reports cited here. The Associated Press reported on the appeal and the Los Angeles Times covered it.
“The toll exacted on us for merely fulfilling our journalistic duties is staggering. We are subjected to detentions, interrogations, and torture by the Israeli military, all for the ‘crime’ of journalistic integrity.”
The words are from the Gaza journalists’ letter, as reproduced by the AP and Los Angeles Times. The appeal gave Washington journalists a way to express solidarity with colleagues in Gaza and to object to U.S. policy and news coverage.

What happened outside the Washington Hilton?
On April 27, 2024, protesters gathered outside the hotel as guests arrived for the annual dinner. The demonstration criticized Biden’s handling of the Israel-Hamas war and the Western news media’s coverage. The AP identified Adalah Justice Project executive director Sandra Tamari as a supporter of the journalists’ letter. CODEPINK said in an April 24 announcement that it and coalition partners planned a nonviolent protest in solidarity with Palestinian journalists, and stated its own political objections to U.S. policy. CODEPINK’s announcement describes the coalition’s stated purpose.
The street protest and the boycott appeal should not be treated as one action: the letter was written by journalists in Gaza and addressed to Washington colleagues; the demonstration was organized by activists and coalition partners outside the hotel. Contemporary accounts establish that protesters demonstrated while the dinner continued inside, but do not show that all, or even most, Washington correspondents followed the appeal.

What was said inside the dinner?
The dinner proceeded while the war received little attention in the program. The AP described it as receiving little mention, and the Los Angeles Times reported that Biden’s speech did not mention the war. The gap between the public protest and the event’s proceedings was part of what demonstrators challenged; the reports describe the event, but do not measure whether the protest changed news coverage or policy.
How many journalists had been killed?
Any figure from the time needs a date and attribution. TIME reported on April 28, 2024 that the Committee to Protect Journalists’ figure was 97 journalists killed covering the war, including 92 Palestinians. That is a dated snapshot, not a current total. The AP separately described a CPJ preliminary investigation published at the time as finding nearly 100 journalists killed; the phrasings reflect the respective reports and should not be read as a single reconciled count.

CPJ program director Carlos Martínez de la Serna told the AP: “Since the Israel-Gaza war began, journalists have been paying the highest price — their lives — to defend our right to the truth. Each time a journalist dies or is injured, we lose a fragment of that truth.”
What is the dinner’s role for the press association?
The White House Correspondents’ Association says the dinner is its main source of revenue, supporting its work for White House journalists, public education and scholarships. That institutional role helps explain why the boycott appeal focused on the dinner as a visible annual event. The association’s official site provides information about its work and dinner history.

What is known about the boycott’s outcome?
Contemporary reports establish that Gaza journalists made the appeal and that demonstrators gathered outside as the dinner went ahead. They do not establish how many journalists ultimately stayed away, whether the appeal changed attendance, or what effect it had on policy or subsequent coverage. The protest’s stated goals and the event’s documented outcome are therefore different kinds of evidence: organizers explained what they hoped to challenge, while reporting records what happened that evening.
