Catherine’s cancer announcement is confirmed, but the claim that a threatened leak forced its timing remains an anonymous, unverified allegation.

No public evidence establishes that Catherine, Princess of Wales, was forced to announce her cancer diagnosis because someone threatened to leak it. That explanation appeared in an anonymous-source claim relayed by PerthNow on April 2, 2024. Catherine’s March 22 announcement is confirmed; the alleged threat and its role in the timing are not.

What the report alleged

PerthNow reported that an anonymous source cited by the Daily Mail said Kensington Palace had been contacted about Catherine’s diagnosis, leaving aides to hurry ahead of a story. The reproduced account does not identify who allegedly contacted the Palace or establish that a leak actually occurred. PerthNow’s April 2 report also said it was unclear whether the alleged leak originated at the London Clinic or somewhere else.

Evoke repeated the allegation on the same date, quoting the wording attributed to the Daily Mail column. Because both reports relay the same anonymous claim, they are not independent confirmation. The original Daily Mail report was not directly available in the sources reviewed. Evoke’s account does not turn the allegation into a verified finding.

What is confirmed about the announcement

In a video released on March 22, 2024, Catherine said tests after abdominal surgery had found cancer. The Associated Press quoted her statement: “Tests after the operation found cancer had been present.” She did not identify the cancer type. The AP reported that treatment began in late February. The Associated Press’s March 22 report summarizes the information she made public.

ABC News Australia reported that several British outlets received a call from Kensington Palace on the afternoon of March 22 saying a significant health update would be public within hours. Catherine’s video followed shortly afterward. That establishes that media outlets were notified shortly before publication; it does not establish why the Palace chose that timing. ABC’s timeline records the sequence.

How the earlier events fit—and what they do not prove

The diagnosis announcement came after weeks of public attention. Kensington Palace had announced in January that Catherine underwent planned abdominal surgery and would be away from public duties while recovering. On March 19, reporting raised the possibility that staff at the London Clinic had tried to access her medical records. ABC’s account describes a possible attempt, not proof that information was obtained, disclosed, or used to prompt the March 22 announcement. ABC’s March 12 coverage provides context on the preceding speculation and events.

  • Established: Catherine announced that post-surgery tests found cancer.
  • Reported but unverified: An anonymous source said the Palace had been contacted about the diagnosis and hurried to get ahead of a story.
  • Not established: Who allegedly contacted the Palace, whether a leak threat was made, whether information was leaked, or whether the allegation caused the timing of the announcement.

What can responsibly be concluded

The word “forced” goes beyond what the public evidence establishes. It describes the anonymous-source explanation relayed in the April 2 coverage, not a confirmed account from Kensington Palace or an identified person. The available reporting does not establish the source of any alleged leak or independently verify that a threat drove the announcement.

Catherine’s diagnosis details beyond what she chose to disclose remain private. In an April 5 response to complaints about its coverage, the BBC said it had explained what was known and “did not speculate on details that had not been made public.” The Independent reported the BBC’s response.
