The formal Windsor image released on 8 August 2025 shows her hair in a chignon—described by Us Weekly as a twisted bun updo—while the solo portrait taken at Gatcombe Park shows her familiar bouffant. The often-repeated claim that the Windsor style was her first makeover in 50 years comes from Us Weekly’s framing, not an official confirmation from Anne or the Royal Family.
What changed in the Windsor portrait?
The formal portrait released on 8 August 2025 shows Anne with her husband, Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence, wearing the Festoon Tiara. Us Weekly describes her hair as a “twisted bun updo,” while Natural Diamonds calls it a chignon. Both terms refer here to the swept-up style in the Windsor photograph. The image was taken before the July state banquet at Windsor Castle for French President Emmanuel Macron, according to Us Weekly and Natural Diamonds.
Us Weekly presented the look as Anne’s first hair makeover in 50 years. That is the publication’s characterization; the Royal Family’s official material about Anne’s birthday does not confirm a 50-year timeline, and no direct comment from Anne about the hairstyle is reported in these accounts.
How it differs from Anne’s solo birthday portrait
The Windsor photograph is not the solo portrait released for Anne’s 75th birthday. The latter was taken by photographer John Swannell at Gatcombe Park and shows Anne in her signature bouffant, wearing a royal-blue dress with white collar, cuffs and trim, ITV reports. It was published ahead of her birthday on 15 August 2025. ITV News identifies the solo image’s setting and styling; ABC News also distinguishes it from the Windsor portrait by Chris Jackson.

The portraits serve different purposes: one is a formal image of Anne and Laurence in the context of a state-banquet evening; the other is a solo birthday photograph at her home. Keeping the two images distinct avoids attributing the Windsor chignon to the Gatcombe Park portrait.
Why the portraits mark her 75th birthday
Anne turned 75 on 15 August 2025. The Royal Family identifies her as the seventh Princess Royal and says she has held the title since June 1987. Its birthday page says she is involved with over 399 charities, organisations and military regiments. The Royal Family’s “75 facts at 75” presents those details as part of the anniversary.

The page also notes a UK commemorative coin made in honour of the birthday, the first UK commemorative coin to feature Anne. The Royal Family says, “The coin features her official Coat of Arms and an official portrait taken by John Swannell.” That wording identifies the portrait as Swannell’s, but does not establish that it is the Windsor chignon image.
